Indole‐3‐Acetic Acid Protects Bovine Hepatocytes Against Palmitic Acid‐Induced Lipid Accumulation and ER Stress Through SIRT3

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Cows with ketosis during the perinatal period often experience damage to the liver, a core metabolic organ, thereby exacerbating the disease's inherent vicious cycle. This study indicates that serum 3‐IAA concentrations were reduced in ketotic cows and show a significant negative correlation with hepatic TG content.

Promoting higher levels of immunity from colostrum among calves on organic dairy farms

open access: yesCalifornia Agriculture
: Colostrum feeding provides immunoglobulins, in a process called transfer of passive immunity, which is critical for dairy calf health and welfare. However, failure of transfer of passive immunity (FTPI) occurs in about 12% of calves nationwide.

Factors affecting breeding practices and surplus calf management: Producer perspectives from Atlantic Canada

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science
: Dairy-beef and veal production play an important role in the North American beef supply, relying almost entirely on surplus calves that are marketed at a young age from dairy farms.

Occurrence and genotyping of Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium in pre-weaned dairy calves in central Sichuan province, China

open access: yesParasite, 2018
Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. are common human and animal pathogens. They have increasingly been reported in dairy calves in recent years; however, multilocus genotyping information for G. duodenalis and Cryptosporidium infecting pre-weaned

Cumulative Reproductive‐Lactation Burdens Induce a Systemic Immunometabolic Trade‐Off Between Milk Yield and Mammary Health of Dairy Cows

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
A population‐scale longitudinal transcriptomic atlas reveals how lactation stage and parity reshape systemic gene regulation in dairy cows. Multiomics‐inspired analyses uncover dynamic immune and metabolic adaptations that contribute to reproductive longevity and sustained productivity across the bovine lifespan.

Comparative study of different liquid diets for dairy calves and the impact on performance and the bacterial community during diarrhea

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
The liquid diet composition can affect dairy calves' performance and diarrhea incidence. The effect of three liquid diets on performance, incidence of diarrhea, and microbial community during diarrhea occurrence in dairy calves were evaluated.

Case-control study of behavior data from automated milk feeders in healthy or diseased dairy calves

open access: yesJDS Communications, 2022
Group housing of preweaning dairy calves is increasing in popularity throughout the dairy industry. However, it can be more difficult to individually monitor calves to identify disease in these group systems. Automated milk feeders (AMF) not only provide

Under‐Explored Species, Breeds and Cell Types With Potential for Cultivated Meat Production

open access: yesFood Bioengineering, EarlyView.
This graphical abstract illustrates how the strategic selection of overlooked cell lines from novel species and specific agricultural breeds can help overcome current manufacturing bottlenecks in cultivated meat production. The schematic links the concept of an ‘ideal cell line’ to four key bioprocessing and product advantages that can be optimised ...

The effects of early handling on play behaviour and social interactions in dairy calves [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The effects of early handling on play behaviour, faecal corticosteroid metabolite concentrations and social interactions during regrouping was studied in 40 Holstein Friesian group housed dairy calves.

The influence of vitamin C deficiency on dermatosis in neonatal dairy calves

open access: yesKufa Journal for Veterinary Medical Sciences, 2019
Vitamin C is an important water-soluble antioxidant, which plays necessary roles in an animal's body, especially in neonatal dairy calves. Neonatal dairy calves receive vitamin C from their dam, and in unique situations, it can cause problems within the ...
