Assessing the reproductive biology of the Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus). [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS One, 2020
The Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus, Squaliformes: Somniosidae) is a long-lived Arctic top predator, which in combination with the high historical and modern fishing pressures, has made it subject to increased scientific focus in recent years ...

Extensive unusual lesions on a large number of immersed human victims found to be from cookiecutter sharks (Isistius spp.): an examination of the Yemenia plane crash. [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Legal Med, 2017
Accurate determination of the origin and timing of trauma is key in medicolegal investigations when the cause and manner of death are unknown. However, distinction between criminal and accidental perimortem trauma and postmortem modifications can be ...

Morphometric Discriminant Analysis of isolated chondrichthyan scales for palaeoecological inferences: the Middle Triassic of the Iberian Chain (Spain) as a case of study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Palaeontological studies on exosqueletal disarticulated remains of chondrichthyans have focused on teeth and only less interest has been paid to scales due their limited taxonomic and systematic significance.

Cutting blade dentitions in squaliform sharks form by modification of inherited alternate tooth ordering patterns. [PDF]

open access: yesR Soc Open Sci, 2016
The squaliform sharks represent one of the most speciose shark clades. Many adult squaliforms have blade-like teeth, either on both jaws or restricted to the lower jaw, forming a continuous, serrated blade along the jaw margin.

Marine water environmental DNA metabarcoding provides a comprehensive fish diversity assessment and reveals spatial patterns in a large oceanic area. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2020
eDNA samples provide information on fish diversity in a broad‐scale marine area, detecting almost ten times more fish species compared with pelagic trawling, including some considered elusive or difficult to capture with traditional fishing methods.

Eocene Shark Teeth From Peninsular Antarctica: Windows to Habitat Use and Paleoceanography. [PDF]

open access: yesPaleoceanogr Paleoclimatol
Abstract Eocene climate cooling, driven by the falling pCO2 and tectonic changes in the Southern Ocean, impacted marine ecosystems. Sharks in high‐latitude oceans, sensitive to these changes, offer insights into both environmental shifts and biological responses, yet few paleoecological studies exist.

Primer registro del tiburón Etmopterus unicolor (Engelhardt, 1912) frente a Valdivia, Chile (Chondrichthyes: Dalatiidae) [PDF]

open access: yesInvestigaciones marinas, 2006
One specimen of Etmopterus unicolor (Engelhardt, 1912) (Squaliformes: Dalatiidae), caught as part of the by catch of the "Hoki" Macruronus magellanicus novaezelandiae (Hector, 1871) fishery was studied. The lantern shark was caught on October 2003, on the continental slope off Valdivia, Chile, at 400 m depth, through trawling fishing.

Chondrichthyan (Holocephali, Squalomorphii and Batomorphii) remains from the Badenian of southern Hungary (Tekeres, Mecsek Mountains): the first deepwater cartilaginous fishes from the Middle Miocene of the Central Paratethys

open access: yesPapers in Palaeontology, Volume 8, Issue 6, November/December 2022., 2022
Abstract Middle Miocene (Badenian) chondrichthyan fossils collected from the Tekeres Schlieren Member of the Baden Formation at Tekeres (southern Hungary, Mecsek Mts) are described here. The chondrichthyan assemblage is exceptionally diverse and well‐preserved, and consists of holocephalans, selachians and batomorphs.

First recorded case of leucism in the velvet belly lantern shark Etmopterus spinax (Squaliformes: Etmopteridae)

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ichthyology, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 455-461, July 2022., 2022
Abstract The capture of a female specimen of the velvet belly lantern shark Etmopterus spinax with abnormal skin coloration is reported. The specimen was captured off northern Spain (Bay of Biscay, North‐eastern Atlantic) in 2021 by bottom trawling. The lack of dermal melanophores combined with a normal retinal pigmentation, lead us to considerate the ...
