Calf performance in a cow-driven cow-calf contact system: Effect of 2 methods to gradually reduce cows' access to their calf

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science
: Knowledge is lacking on separation strategies that can best prepare calves to final separation from the dam in cow-calf contact (CCC) systems. This controlled trial compared the effects of 2 different methods to gradually reduce cows' access to their ...

MARK4 enhances stress granule formation under oxidative stress and increases tau accumulation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
MARK4 (red dots) localizes to stress granules (orange dots) and promotes their formation under oxidative stress by modulating TIA1 (blue dots). MARK4 and TIA1 synergistically increase tau (purple) accumulation, and the reduction of the TIA1 ortholog suppresses neurodegeneration in a fly model.

Farmers’ experiences of implementing cow-calf-contact systems on organic dairy farms

open access: yesAnimal
Most people are unaware of the common practice of separating dairy cows and calves shortly after birth, and when informed, often have a negative view of this practice.

Seamless Mechanical Programming Through Hybrid Epoxy–Acrylate Printing for Soft–Rigid Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Hybrid epoxy‐acrylate printing enables seamless fabrication of soft–rigid robotic systems with covalently integrated interfaces and functionally graded mechanics. Grayscale exposure expands the accessible material space, enabling spatially programmed actuation through patterned stiffness while revealing the mechanics and durability of continuously ...

Consequences of weaning and separation for feed intake and milking characteristics of dairy cows in a cow-calf contact system

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science
: In cow-calf contact (CCC) systems breaking the maternal bond may induce stress for the cow, thereby affecting feed intake, milk yield, milk flow rate, and milk electrical conductivity.

Induced reactions in young rabbits of dams of different parity and reared on two different nursing schedules

open access: yesApplied Animal Behaviour Science, 1986
Abstract The purpose of this study was to see whether or not there are differences in growth and behaviour of New Zealand White young rabbits born to primiparous or multiparous does or reared under free or controlled nursing schedules.. A total of 143 young rabbits from 20 litters were divided into three groups: 1.
