Numerical simulation of flooding of a damaged ship

Ocean Engineering, 2011
A clear understanding of the complex dynamic behaviour of a damaged ship and floodwater remains limited for ship designers and safety authorities. In this paper, a Navier–Stokes (NS) solver, which combines the volume of fluid (VOF) method with dynamic mesh techniques, was developed to simulate the flooding of a damaged ship.

Performance assessment of damaged ship hulls

Ocean Engineering, 2013
In this paper, a probabilistic framework for performance assessment of ship hulls under sudden damage accounting for different operational conditions is presented. Grounding and collision accidents are considered as sudden damage scenarios. The combined effects of sudden damage and progressive deterioration due to corrosion are investigated.

Damage Stability Requirements for Tankships, Chemical Ships, and Gas Ships

Marine Technology and SNAME News, 1976
This paper reviews the various U. S. regulations, international conventions and IMCO codes which contain damage stability requirements for tankships, chemical ships, and gas ships. A brief history of damage stability standards and background on the development of the 1973 Pollution Convention, the IMCO Chemical Code, and the IMCO Gas Code are presented.

Fatigue damage in the side shells of ships

Marine Structures, 1995
More than 40% of the registered fatigue cracks in ship structures are observed to occur in the side shell, more specifically in the connections of longitudinals to transverse web frames. The fatigue damage is caused partly by vertical and horizontal wave-induced hull bending and partly by outside water pressure on the side shell.

Damage location system for a tanker ship

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1992
Hydrophones are installed in each tank of a liquid cargo tanker ship. In the unfortunate event that the tanker collides with an obstacle in the water, the hydrophones detect the shock wave due to the collision. The relative first arrival times of the shock wave at the respective hydrophones are measured and the arrival-time differences between two ...

Study on Collision Damage Behavior of Ship

Advanced Materials Research, 2012
Ship collision is a kind of dangerous accident which may result in serious damage of struck hull structure during shipping process. The damage of ship depends on the relative rigidity of striking ship and the capabilities of crash resistance of ship structures.

Longitudinal strength of ships with accidental damages

Marine Structures, 2002
This paper presents an investigation of the longitudinal strength of ships with damages due to grounding or collision accidents. Analytical equations are derived for the residual hull girder strength and verified with direct calculations of sample commercial ships for a broad spectrum of accidents. Hull girder ultimate strengths of these sample vessels

Repairing Ship Damage in Forward Areas

Naval Engineers Journal, 1991
ABSTRACTThis paper describes Navy plans for ship battle damage repair (SBDR). The goal is to repair battle damage as far forward as possible. This would return lightly damaged ships to service quickly, reduce time lost for transit and save heavily damaged ships for subsequent repair.

Ship collision damages: Case studies

2019
Closed-form expressions to estimate the collision energy and damage extent for ship collision analysis have been developed and finalized in Zhang et al. (2019a). This analysis procedure has also been adopted in the Guidance Notes for Collision Assessment for the Location of Low-Flashpoint Fuel Tanks (Lloyd’s Register 2016) and for collision risk ...
