Exile in the Damascus Document

Jerome Murphy-OConnor draws attention to indications of Babylonian influence on the Essenes, and indications that the legislation of the Damascus Document was intended for a group living in a gentile environment. Clearly the hypothesis raises a number of important issues, and the arguments on which it is based are discussed in this chapter.

The Development of the Early Recensions of the Damascus Document

The work entitled the Damascus Document was first discovered in the Cairo Genizah, in manuscripts copied in the Middle Ages. Two manuscripts of the composition were found in the Genizah: MS A containing 16 pages, and MS B, 2 pages. There is a partial overlap between the two texts.
