Guided by the golden ratio, a class of aperiodic architected metamaterials is introduced to address the intrinsic trade‐off between strength and toughness. By unifying local geometric heterogeneity with global order, the golden‐ratio‐guided aperiodic architecture promotes spatial delocalization of damage tolerence regions, leading to more tortuous ...

Unusual Swelling Behavior of Hydrogels Modified with Spiropyran as Appendage or Crosslinker
Not so innocent after all—spiropyran crosslinkers in methylenebisacrylamide‐crosslinked poly(acrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid) hydrogels increase crosslinking density, but also, counterintuitively, increase swelling. Charge complexation, cooperative chemo‐mechanical effects, and aggregation may explain these observations.

Damped finite-time-singularity driven by noise
We consider the combined influence of linear damping and noise on a dynamical finite-time-singularity model for a single degree of freedom. We find that the noise effectively resolves the finite-time-singularity and replaces it by a first-passage-time or

Spectrally Tunable 2D Material‐Based Infrared Photodetectors for Intelligent Optoelectronics
Intelligent optoelectronics through spectral engineering of 2D material‐based infrared photodetectors. Abstract The evolution of intelligent optoelectronic systems is driven by artificial intelligence (AI). However, their practical realization hinges on the ability to dynamically capture and process optical signals across a broad infrared (IR) spectrum.

Decomposition of process damping ratios and verification of process damping model for chatter vibration [PDF]
In the previous study, by the same authors, titled ‘‘A new process damping model (PDM) for chatter vibration (Measurement, 44 (8) (2011) 1342–1348)’’, a new approach has been presented for obtaining process damping ratios (PDRs). This PDM has been constituted on the basis of the shear angle ðuÞ oscillations of the cutting tool and the alteration of the

Geometry‐Dependent Adhesion in Transparent Monodomain Liquid Crystal Elastomers
Liquid Crystal Elastomers (LCEs) are emerging as exciting pressure‐sensitive adhesives. We examine adhesion in chemically identical elastomer films, exploring the influence of geometry (director orientation) and phase (nematic or isotropic). We demonstrate the potential of these aligned films as transparent, tunable, broad‐temperature‐range smart ...

Material damping ratio from free-vibration method
Abstract One important aspect of soil dynamics is attenuation or energy loses. This inherent dynamic property is essential in the analysis of soil behavior subjected to a dynamic load. Energy absorption in soils leads to the definition of an equivalent viscous damping ratio (D).

Fractional robust control of ligthly damped systems [PDF]
The article proposes a method to design a robust controller ensuring the damping ratio of a closed-loop control. The method uses a contour para-meterized by the damping ratio in the Nichols plane and the complex non-integer (or fractional)differentiation
