Monophyletic origin of brood care in damselfishes
Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2011The absence of a pelagic larval stage and brood care has evolved very few times in coral reef fishes. Damselfishes, a widely represented group with more than 380 species, includes only three such species, the monotypic Acanthochromis polyacanthus, and the two Altrichthys species, Altrichthys azurelineatus and Altrichthys curatus.

Memory retention of appetitive and aversive conditioning in the damselfish Stegastes fuscus.
Journal of Fish Biology, 2019We compared the memory of damselfish Stegastes fuscus in an aversive and appetitive conditioning task. Fish were trained to associate the sides of the tank that corresponded to the presence of a positive (conspecific presence) or negative (electroshock ...

Initiators, Leaders, and Recruitment Mechanisms in the Collective Movements of Damselfish
The American Naturalist, 2013Explaining how individual behavior and social interactions give rise to group-level outcomes and affect issues such as leadership is fundamental to the understanding of collective behavior. Here we examined individual and collective behavioral dynamics in groups of humbug damselfish both before and during a collective movement.

Thyroid hormone (TH) is involved in regulating the reproduction of vertebrates. Its physiological action in the target tissues is due to the conversion of TH by iodothyronine deiodinases.

Experimental induction of neurofibromatosis in bicolor damselfish [PDF]
Damselfish ileurofibromatosis (DNF) is a neoplastic disease affecting the peripheral nervous system and chromatophores of bicolor damselfish Pornacentruspartitus on Florida (USA) reefs. This report presents the results of transmission experiments using intramuscular and intraperitoneal injection of a variety of tumor preparations to induce DNF ...

The reproductive ecology of female Hawaiian damselfish Dascyllus albisella (Gill) was studied at Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii (21°27′N; 157°47′W) during two peak reproductive seasons (June–September 1997, July–August 1998). In both years, spawning occurred cyclically every 5–7 days, with all spawning in the study area in each cycle concluding within 2–3 ...

Neurofibromatosis, 1990
Variable prevalence rates of damselfish neurofibromatosis (DNF) between Florida Keys reefs have previously been used as evidence against a genetic etiology of DNF in favor of an infectious etiology. Such a conclusion also presumes a genetically homogeneous population, that is, panmixia, throughout the reef system population.
