Pyrrolizidine alkaloids in overwintering monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) from mexico

Experientia, 1987
North American populations of the monarch butterfly,Danaus plexippus, have been found to contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids and their N-oxides. Analytical methods (TLC, GC, and GC/MS) have been developed to isolate, quantitate, and structurally elucidate the alkaloids.

Lipid transport in the migrating Monarch butterfly,Danaus p. plexippus

The transport of lipid in the haemolymph of the Monarch butterfly during its fall migration was examined. Diglyceride was the major lipid class of 2 electrophoretically distinct lipoprotein fractions in both males and females. Triglycerides, hydrocarbons, free fatty acids, phosphatidyl cholines and phosphatidyl ethanolamines were minor components of ...

These include “nudging” by the male, aerial pursuit, aerial “hairpencilling,” aerial takedown of the female, antennal palpation by the male, copulation, and ...

Hormonal regulation of hemolymph lipid concentration in the Monarch Butterfly, Danaus plexippus

General and Comparative Endocrinology, 1978
Abstract Selective elevation of hemolymph lipid can be demonstrated in flying Monarch Butterflies. In addition, the low levels of hemolymph lipid characteristic of wild-caught postmigratory Monarchs remain low in winter conditions but are rapidly elevated when winter animals are placed in summer conditions.
