Meta‐analysis on the effects of composition and configuration of landscape on the functional diversity of tropical mammals

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 5, May 2026.
Our findings demonstrate that mammal functional richness in tropical regions requires integrating habitat amount and landscape configuration into land‐use planning. Conservation strategies should move beyond setting targets for total habitat area and explicitly incorporate configuration metrics that promote heterogeneity and functional connectivity. In

Systematics of the New World Rostrate Genus Metaxyphloeus Thomas, 1984 (Coleoptera: Laemophloeidae): Morphological Evidence for Monophyly Supporting a Broader Generic Concept

open access: yesAustral Entomology, Volume 65, Issue 2, May 2026.
ABSTRACT A morphology‐based MP analysis is undertaken to test the monophyly of the lined flat bark beetle genus Metaxyphloeus Thomas, 1984, as well as to hypothesize its intra‐ and intergeneric evolutionary relationships. Based on the results of the present work, Metaxyphloeus, as currently composed, is hypothesized as a monophyletic assemblage of ...

‘Missing persons’: Ancient legacies of human–environment interaction in tropical natural properties inscribed under the 1972 World Heritage Convention

open access: yesArchaeometry, Volume 68, Issue S2, Page S9-S30, May 2026.
Abstract Cultural and natural values form the core of World Heritage designation. Properties displaying both values, however, comprise a fraction of inscriptions (currently c. 3%) to the World Heritage List. In 1992, when that fraction stood at c. 5%, adoption of the popular ‘cultural landscapes’ category of cultural heritage in 1992 was therefore ...

Moth Communities Are More Diverse in the Understory Than in the Canopy of a Tropical Lowland Rainforest in NW Ecuador

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
We investigate the stratification of five clades of Lepidoptera: Erebidae‐Arctiinae, Geometridae, Hedylidae, Saturniidae, and Sphingidae in a tropical rain forest of the Chocó region in NW Ecuador. Average species richness was higher in the understory, median sample sizes were similar between strata and we found more species in regenerating forests ...
