Cuteness as a ‘Dark Pattern’ in Home Robots

2019 14th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), 2019
Dark patterns are a recent phenomenon in the field of interaction design, where design patterns and behavioral psychology are deployed in ways that deceive the user. However, the current corpus of dark patterns literature focuses largely on screen-based digital interactions and should be expanded to include home robots.

Dark Lung Pattern

2016
A dark lung pattern is present when variable portions of pulmonary parenchyma show reduced attenuation to the X‐rays, and then are darker than normal. The size and number of the vessels within the pathologic dark areas are smaller than in the nonpathologic white areas.

Anti-patterns and dark patterns

2019
Anti-patterns are recurring solutions that create more problems than they solve. On the surface, they may seem appealing as solutions to your design problems, but dig a little deeper and you’ll find there’s more pain than promise. As with the three ingredients of a UI pattern we saw in Chapter 1, here are the details of an anti-pattern:

Sunglint Patterns: Unusual Dark Patches

Science, 1969
Anomalous dark areas in sunglint patterns are occasionally seen in photographs taken by the Applications Technology Satellite. These dark areas appear to be caused by relatively calm surface conditions against a background of higher sea states. Evidence of cold water temperatures suggest the presence of upwelling.

Monetary Dark Patterns

2014
If time is money, then it should come as no surprise that if there are temporal dark patterns, there are monetary dark patterns as well. A cynic would view these patterns as a means for companies to extract extra money from users, while an accountant might conclude these patterns are actually good short-term business.

Temporal Dark Patterns

2014
Temporal dark patterns are patterns that request too much time, provide too little entertainment time, or result in users feeling like they’ve wasted their time. Temporal dark patterns pose particular danger to users as their power is already well known by developers, and they’ve been honed to a high degree of effectiveness.
