When Infrastructure Pushes Residents Out: High‐Speed Rail and Tourism Outflows

open access: yesJournal of Regional Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper examines the impact of high‐speed rail (HSR) connectivity on both inbound and outbound tourism inflows. Leveraging the opening of a new HSR line connecting a northern Spanish region with mainland Spain, we employ a triple difference‐in‐differences design combined with inverse probability weighting (IPW) to evaluate the causal effect

The Great British Productivity Puzzle and Regional Industries: A Dynamic Multilevel Spatial Frontier Analysis

open access: yesJournal of Regional Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Using two approaches, we contribute to sub‐national economic performance measurement by netting out the influence of a region's performance on its industries. The first approach measures performance using technical efficiency and involves introducing the first multilevel spatial stochastic frontier model.

Networked Regional Resilience: Diffusion of Risk and Adaptation Across Interconnected Regions

open access: yesJournal of Regional Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Regions face not only direct exposure to economic and physical shocks but also indirect consequences of actions in interconnected regions. This paper examines how socio‐spatial networks shape regional resilience to contagious shocks through dynamic feedback between risk diffusion and adaptation diffusion.

The Effect of Airbnb on Housing Prices: Evidence From the 2017 Solar Eclipse

open access: yesJournal of Regional Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study exploits the 2017 solar eclipse as a natural experiment to estimate the causal impact of Airbnb activity on housing prices. The eclipse created a temporary demand shock that induced a persistent increase in Airbnb supply. Using an IV/2SLS framework, we find that a 1% increase in Airbnb listings raises housing prices by 0.037%–0.043%,
