Improving Darwin Core for research and management of alien species
To improve the suitability of the Darwin Core standard for the research and management of alien species, the standard needs to express the native status of organisms, how well established they are and how they came to occupy a location.

Evolution of microbes and viruses: A paradigm shift in evolutionary biology?
When Charles Darwin formulated the central principles of evolutionary biology in the Origin of Species in 1859 and the architects of the Modern Synthesis integrated these principles with population genetics almost a century later, the principal if not ...

This study presents the first entirely isogenic heart‐on‐chip, unifying cardiomyocytes, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells from a single iPSC source. The platform reveals a critical biological insight: the endothelium actively shields cardiac tissue from drug‐induced toxicity, challenging the predictive accuracy of conventional, avascular models for ...

Possessing Natural Worlds: Life and Death in Biocultural Collections
The second voyage of the HMS Beagle (1831-1836) offers an illuminating case study for contextualising the British Empire’s efforts to secure access and sanction control over natural and cultural resources located in distant regions of the globe. Attempts

Giant Berry‐phase‐Driven X‐Ray Beam Translations in Strain‐Engineered Semiconductor Crystals
Due to the Berry‐phase effect, X‐rays propagating in deformed crystals undergo large translations, interesting for X‐ray optics applications. Here, the lattice expansion observed upon H irradiation of dilute‐nitride semiconductors is exploited to engineer the deformation landscape of selectively hydrogenated GaAsN epilayers.

Hydrogel Confinement Strategies for 3D Cell Culture in Microfluidic Systems
Hydrogel confinement structures are key to organizing 3D cell cultures in microfluidic devices. This review classifies five structural strategies (micropillar, phaseguide, porous membrane, stepped‐height, and support‐free) and examines their trade‐offs alongside fabrication methods.

This study introduces a framework that combines graph neural networks with causal inference to forecast recurrence and uncover the clinical and pathological factors driving it. It further provides interpretability, validates risk factors via counterfactual and interventional analyses, and offers evidence‐based insights for treatment planning ...
