From armadillos to sloths: Patterns and variations in xenarthran coronary anatomy

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Species of the superorder Xenarthra play a vital ecological role in the Neotropics. Despite their evolutionary significance, anatomical studies on their coronary circulation remain scarce. This study investigated the coronary anatomy of 82 hearts from nine Xenarthra species across the Dasypodidae, Myrmecophagidae, and Bradypodidae.

Indirect effects of fast‐growing urban development on wildlife in a coastal protected area of Costa Rica

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We studied the effects of urban growth on wildlife near Parque Nacional Marino las Baulas, Costa Rica. Since 1991, buildings increased 1007%, mainly in the buffer zone. We identified eight native species extracting garbage from containers, with raccoons (Procyon lotor) comprising most detections (84%), and four other species being potential sea turtle ...

Analysis of the synaptonemal complex of the nine-banded armadillo, Dasypus novemcinctus

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 2000
The synaptonemal complex (SC) of three specimens of the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) was analyzed. Thirty-two bivalents (2n = 64) were observed, 31 of them being autosomes and one an XY sexual bivalent.

Differences in mammal community response to highway construction across different levels of human land use

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Worldwide, transportation agencies have been involved in road mitigation efforts to reduce road mortality and promote connectivity of endangered species. Baseline data on how mammals respond to highway construction, however, are rarely collected in road mitigation and monitoring studies, including in the USA.

Wildlife temporal behaviors in response to human activity changes during and following COVID‐19 park closures

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
With urbanization reducing the amount of available wildlife habitat, and outdoor recreation increasing the human activity within wildlife habitats, it is important to understand the effects of human activity on animal behavior. This study examined how the reduction in human presence in urban parks in Gainesville, Florida, affected the temporal ...

Use of species’ responses to cryptic anthropogenic disturbances for monitoring biodiversity outcomes in tropical forests

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Measuring area‐based conservation outcomes in tropical forests is challenging due to cryptic human disturbances (e.g., hunting). As a result, comparative studies of management strategies providing quantitative outcomes remain scarce, especially in the Neotropics.

CARACTERIZACIÓN DE LA POBLACIÓN DE Dasypus novemcinctus Y FAUNA ASOCIADA A SUS MADRIGUERAS EN SONÁ, VERAGUAS, PANAMÁ

open access: yesTecnociencia, 2023
La evaluación de las poblaciones de armadillos en zonas perturbadas por asentamientos y ganadería, reciben poca importancia, lo que afecta el estado de conservación de la especie.
