Modeling approaches in science can be dichotomized between the statistical versus the mathematical models. The former are strongly data oriented (experimental or field data) and can be used for quantitative predictions. The latter are more qualitative and conceptual and focus more on explaining the mechanisms ruling the phenomena under study.
