Embedded Systems as Datacenters
2010Designing embedded systems the way we did 20 years ago is still alive and well. As expected, with declining costs, embedded systems are appearing in more and more applications. Advances to the state of the art in creating such systems, where memory and processor are precious resources, have continued, and this work is to be applauded.

A Case for Heterogeneous Flash in the Datacenter
2013 IEEE 33rd International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems Workshops, 2013We explore the idea of heterogeneous NAND flash which possesses pages and blocks of multiple sizes. This heterogeneity can then be exploited to accommodate the diversity in data access patterns found in most datacenter storage workloads. We identify various tradeoffs offered by such pages and blocks.

Killer Fabrics for Scalable Datacenters
2010 IEEE International Conference on Communications, 2010Most datacenter networks are based on specialized edge-core topologies, which are costly to build, difficult to maintain and consume too much power. We propose enhancements to layer-two (L2) Ethernet switches to enable multipath L2 routing in scalable datacenters. This replaces an expensive router with commodity switches.
