In chapters 6 to 8 we have discussed the component parts of a DBMS in vendorindependent terms. In chapter 9 we discussed the distribution of components and data. In this chapter we provide an overview of two prominent commercial DBMS, one relational the other object-oriented. Our aim is to illustrate the functionality of existing DBMS products.

In this chapter we shall reflect the relational data model (chapter 3) against the contemporary practice of relational database systems. Contemporary practice is primarily centred around a language known as SQL (Structured Query Language). SQL was originally designed as a query language based on the relational calculus (section 3.3.11).
