Electroactive Liquid Crystal Elastomers as Soft Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electroactive liquid crystal elastomers (eLCEs) can be actuated via electromechanical, electrochemical, or electrothermal effects. a) Electromechanical effects include Maxwell stress, electrostriction, and the electroclinic effect. b) Electrochemical effects arise from electrode redox reactions.

Stability analysis of electric power systems for ‘more electric’ aircraft [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This paper presents a comprehensive assessment of small-signal stability for a “more-electric” aircraft power system consisting of a synchronous variable-frequency generator which supplies several power electronic controlled loads via an 18-pulse ...

Power conversion for a novel AC/DC aircraft electrical distribution system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper proposes a novel and compact AC/DC electrical distribution system for new generation aircraft. In these new aircraft power systems, all loads are fed by two dc bus systems: at 28V and at +/-270V.

Photo‐Switching Thermal and Lithium‐Ion Conductivity in Azobenzene Polymers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Light‐responsive azobenzene polymers control thermal and ionic transport simultaneously through structural transitions. UV illumination disrupts π–π stacking, converting crystalline trans states to amorphous cis configurations. Thermal conductivity drops from 0.45 to 0.15 W·m−1·K−1 while Li+ diffusivity increases 100 fold. This dual transport switching

A comparison of DC- versus AC-based minigrids for cost-effective electrification of rural developing communities

open access: yesEnergy Reports, 2019
Sub-Saharan Africa continues to suffer energy poverty due to low grid expansion rates necessitated by low economic activities in those regions, sparse population distribution coupled with low household load demands, and insufficient power generation.

A study of Schwarz converters for nuclear powered spacecraft [PDF]

open access: yes
High power space systems which use low dc voltage, high current sources such as thermoelectric generators, will most likely require high voltage conversion for transmission purposes.

Mechanotransducing Organic Electrochemical Diode for Crosstalk‐Inhibited Artificial Skin

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach is presented to a stretchable mechanotransducing diode that unifies rectification and tactile‐sensing functionality. This approach enables to fabricate the diode that maintains a large rectification ratio (5 × 102) at a high operational frequency (100 Hz).
