Multi‐phase VSI DC‐link capacitor considerations

open access: yesIET Electric Power Applications, 2019
The modelling, control, switching schemes, novel applications, etc. of multi‐phase voltage source inverters (VSIs) have been studied in recent years. While some DC‐link capacitor considerations have been reported and ripple current assessments presented, the impact of these analyses on system design has not previously been quantified.

Enhanced DC-Link Capacitor Voltage Balancing Control of DC–AC Multilevel Multileg Converters

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2015
This paper presents a capacitor voltage balancing control applicable to any multilevel dc-ac converter formed by a single set of series-connected capacitors implementing the dc link and semiconductor devices, such as the diode-clamped topology. The control is defined for any number of dc-link voltage levels and converter legs (for single-phase and ...

Review of the calculation of DC-link capacitor current

open access: yesFrontiers in Energy Research, 2023
In the voltage source power electronic converter, DC-link capacitors usually work as buffering elements between the DC and AC sides. The high failure rate and large space occupied by the DC-link capacitors directly affect the reliability and power ...

Unit Partition Resonance Analysis Strategy for Impedance Network in Modular Power Converters

open access: yesFrontiers in Energy Research, 2022
In modular power converters, the dc-link capacitor has the highest failure rate due to thermal stress, reducing system performance and reliability. Current harmonics are one of the prominent causes of thermal stress on the dc-link capacitor that may get ...

Safe Operating Area of DC-Link Film Capacitors

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, 2021
This letter proposes a Safe Operating Area (SOA) concept for film capacitors in DC-link applications. The SOA is presented by capacitor voltage and ripple current, considering the impact of ambient temperature, degradation, and parameter variance. The theoretical derivations and proof-of-concept experimental verifications are given.
