Possibility of Power Tapping From Composite AC–DC Power Transmission Lines
IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2008A recently proposed concept of simultaneous ac-dc power transmission enables the long extra high-voltage ac lines to be loaded close to their thermal limits. The conductors are allowed to carry a certain amount of dc current superimposed on usual ac.

Progress of long-distance DC electrical power transmission
2017 1st International Conference on Electrical Materials and Power Equipment (ICEMPE), 2017Progress of long-distance DC electrical power transmission systems is reviewed. Pros and cons are analyzed and compared regarding different technologies. Major electrical power transmission systems may consist of overhead line (OHL), extruded cable, mass-impregnated (MI) cable, oil-filled (OF) cable, gas insulated line (GIL), superconducting cable and ...

The Alternating Evolution of DC Power Transmission [Historical]
IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine, 2013After more than one century of evolution of alternating current (ac) and thanks to the competitive costs of alternators and transformers, today a great majority of electricity is produced, transmitted, and distributed worldwide by means of ac polyphase systems [1], [2].

High-voltage DC transmission: a power electronics workhorse
IEEE Spectrum, 1996Thyristor-based HVDC converter technology is used for highly reliable power transfer across natural or national boundaries or between AC systems designed for different frequencies or incompatible frequency controls. The author discusses the benefits of HVDC transmission and describes HVDC transmission system configurations.

The peculiarities of high-voltage dc power transmission
IEEE Spectrum, 1966The cost of a basic dc line is always less than that of an ac line. For submarine installations the difference is particularly pronounced; for underground cables, the difference is somewhat smaller. For overhead transmission on land, many studies show that a dc line generally costs about one third less than an ac line of the same capacity.
