Neurotransmitters and Immunity: Molecular Mechanisms, Biological Functions, Diseases, and Potential Therapeutic Targets. [PDF]

open access: yesMedComm (2020)
Role of neurotransmitters in multiple pathological processes. Various neurotransmitters, including ACh, EPI, NE, 5‐HT, histamine, DA, glutamate, GABA, and neuropeptides participate in regulating key pathological events, including tumor proliferation, tumor migration, remodeling of the immune microenvironment, and the development of NDDs and ...

Predicting steady-state endoxifen plasma concentrations in breast cancer patients by CYP2D6 genotyping or phenotyping. Which approach is more reliable? [PDF]

open access: yesPharmacol Res Perspect, 2020
Abstract In previous studies, steady‐state Z‐endoxifen plasma concentrations (ENDOss) correlated with relapse‐free survival in women on tamoxifen (TAM) treatment for breast cancer. ENDOss also correlated significantly with CYP2D6 genotype (activity score) and CYP2D6 phenotype (dextromethorphan test).

Neuroprotective function of DJ-1 in Parkinson's disease. [PDF]

open access: yesOxid Med Cell Longev, 2013
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is caused by dopaminergic neuronal death in the substantia nigra, resulting in a reduced level of dopamine in the striatum. Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction are thought to be major causes of neurodegeneration in PD.

Burden of arrhythmia in hospitalized HIV patients

open access: yesClinical Cardiology, Volume 44, Issue 1, Page 66-77, January 2021., 2021
Abstract Background The improved life expectancy observed in patients living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has made age‐related cardiovascular complications, including arrhythmias, a growing health concern. Hypothesis We describe the temporal trends in frequency of various arrhythmias and assess impact of arrhythmias on hospitalized

Ringed seal (Pusa hispida) seasonal movements, diving, and haul‐out behavior in the Beaufort, Chukchi, and Bering Seas (2011–2017)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 10, Issue 12, Page 5595-5616, June 2020., 2020
Arctic warming and sea‐ice loss will have implications for the conservation of ice‐dependent ringed seals. A better understanding of their spatial ecology will help characterize emerging ecological trends and benefit management decisions. We present analyses of ringed seal tracking and dive data (n = 17). Activities occurring on varying temporal scales

Management of psoriasis as a systemic disease: what is the evidence?

open access: yesBritish Journal of Dermatology, Volume 182, Issue 4, Page 840-848, April 2020., 2020
Summary Background Psoriasis is a chronic, systemic immune‐mediated disease characterized by development of erythematous, indurated, scaly, pruritic and often painful skin plaques. Psoriasis pathogenesis is driven by proinflammatory cytokines and psoriasis is associated with increased risk for comorbidities, including, but not limited to, psoriatic ...

The frequency of photosensitizing drug dispensings in Austria and Germany: a correlation with their photosensitizing potential based on published literature

open access: yesJournal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, Volume 34, Issue 3, Page 589-600, March 2020., 2020
Abstract Background Drug‐induced photosensitivity refers to the development of cutaneous adverse events due to interaction between a pharmaceutical compound and sunlight. Although photosensitivity is a very commonly listed side‐effect of systemic drugs, reliable data on its actual incidence are lacking so far. Objectives A possible approach to evaluate

Effect of Antioxidant Treatment on Fibrogenesis in Rats with Carbon Tetrachloride‐Induced Cirrhosis

open access: yesInternational Scholarly Research Notices, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
Aim. This study aimed to assess the antioxidant activity of quercetin (Q) in an experimental model of cirrhosis induced by CCl4 inhalation. Materials and Methods. We used 25 male Wistar rats (250 g) that were divided into 3 groups: control (CO), CCl4, and CCl4 + Q.

Leukocyte count and new‐onset diabetes mellitus in people with HIV: A longitudinal study

open access: yesHIV Medicine, Volume 26, Issue 10, Page 1585-1599, October 2025.
Abstract Objectives The risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) is increased in people with HIV. Chronic inflammation contributes to DM risk. High leukocytes are associated with DM in the general population, but in people with HIV, evidence of a leukocyte–DM association is limited. Methods We included participants of the Swiss HIV Cohort Study with new‐onset DM
