Accumulation of Damaging Lipids in the Arf1-Ablated Neurons Promotes Neurodegeneration through Releasing mtDNA and Activating Inflammatory Pathways in Microglia. [PDF]

open access: yesAdv Sci (Weinh)
Arf1 defects activate the AKT‐mTORC1‐SREBP1‐FASN pathway to increase lipid synthesis and disrupt ER‐mitochondrial‐lysosomal homeostasis in neurons. Impaired mitochondria secrete damaged mtDNA via mitochondria‐derived extracellular vesicles, which is phagocytosed by the microglia and activated inflammation signaling.

Interleukin‐7 improves the fitness of regulatory T cells for adoptive transfer

open access: yesImmunology, Volume 170, Issue 4, Page 540-552, December 2023., 2023
Regulatory T cell (Treg) expanded in the presence of interleukin‐7 (IL‐7, IL‐7M) display a CD45RA+CD62L+CD95+ phenotype and are less suppressive that Treg expanded with the standard method (StM). Once infused in vivo IL‐7M‐Treg persist longer and showed similar suppressive activity compared to StM‐Treg.

Prognostic value of non‐invasive scores based on liver stiffness measurement, spleen diameter and platelets in HIV‐infected patients

open access: yesLiver International, Volume 43, Issue 7, Page 1427-1439, July 2023., 2023
Abstract Background and Aims People living with HIV (PLWH) are at high risk for advanced chronic liver disease and related adverse outcomes. We aimed to validate the prognostic value of non‐invasive scores based on liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and on markers of portal hypertension (PH), namely platelets and spleen diameter, in PLWH.

Variability in nutrient composition of the edible long‐horned grasshopper (Ruspolia differens) in Uganda and its potential in alleviating food insecurity

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 11, Issue 6, Page 3558-3574, June 2023., 2023
Long‐horned grasshoppers are consumed in over 21 African countries. Crude protein (28%–45%), crude fat (41%–54%), and energy (582–644 Kj/100 g) of grasshoppers are comparable to that of plant and animal origins. Grasshopper meal could be considered as functional food ingredients capable of supplying adequate essential macro‐ and micronutrients ...

Sanctions, National Security, and Free Speech

open access: yesGlobal Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A fundamental, but largely overlooked, aspect of the New Washington Consensus is the use of national security arguments to restrict speech and punish disfavored speakers. Although the United States has a longer history of using sanctions to restrict speech in the terrorism context, it has recently applied sanctions to restrict political speech,
