Nonmalarial Infant Deaths and DDT Use for Malaria Control

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2003
Although dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane (DDT) is being banned worldwide, countries in sub-Saharan Africa have sought exemptions for malaria control. Few studies show illness in children from the use of DDT, and the possibility of risks to them from DDT

Enantiomeric fraction and isomeric composition to assess sources of DDT residues in soils.

open access: yesChemosphere, 2015
Chiral pesticides such as o,p'-DDT can undergo enantioselective microbial degradation in soil. Hence, the enantiomeric fraction (EF) of o,p'-DDT was used as an approach to assess potential recent inputs of DDT in the lower part of the Ebro River basin ...

Impact of Environmental Exposure on Infant Sleep : The Exposome Approach

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
This review explores how exposure to environmental pollutants during the first 1000 days of life may affect infant sleep. Evidence suggests potential links between chemical exposures and sleep disturbances, underscoring the need for more research on early‐life vulnerability and the impact of pollutants in air, diet, and breast milk.

Study mass transfer of Cd, Hg, As, DDT and chlordane through adsorption onto granular activated carbon [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The kinetic theory of liquid indicates that diffusion coefficient for the dilute liquid at ordinary pressure is essentially independent of mixture composition. Mass transfer is important in separation and adsorption process.

Perinatal Exposure of Mice to the Pesticide DDT Impairs Energy Expenditure and Metabolism in Adult Female Offspring

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) has been used extensively to control malaria, typhus, body lice and bubonic plague worldwide, until countries began restricting its use in the 1970s.

Influence and convergence to higher standards: The dual examination of pharmaceutical patents in Brazil

open access: yesThe Journal of World Intellectual Property, EarlyView.
Abstract Between 2001 and 2021, pharmaceutical patent applications filed in Brazil were examined by the patent office (INPI) and the national health regulator (Anvisa). This paper investigates how health regulators can contribute to patent examination by shifting the set of criteria cited as grounds for 2589 negative decisions from both entities ...

Full‐length coding sequence analysis of the voltage‐gated sodium channel and acetylcholinesterase genes reveals target‐site mutations and acetylcholinesterase gene duplication in housefly (Musca domestica) populations in Japanese livestock barns

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
We simultaneously analysed insecticide resistance mutations in VGSC and AChE using NGS and hybridization probe capture in houseflies collected from livestock facilities for the first time. Resistance mutations in both VGSC and AChE were detected in most wild populations, suggesting widespread distribution of resistance genes.

Werner Irnich: Pioneer in the Development of the Dual‐Chamber Pacemaker—An Obituary

open access: yesPacing and Clinical Electrophysiology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Fifty years ago, Werner Irnich presented the concept of an optimal pacemaker capable of responding appropriately to various cardiac arrhythmias and perceptual disturbances, and intended to be used in 85% of patients. With this concept, Irnich was far ahead of his time. His proposed circuitry for AV block and atrial fibrillation, as well as his

Environmental Education and Science Teaching in the Context of a Waldorf School: The Use of a Collective Reading Activity to Reflect on Pesticides

open access: yesSchool Science and Mathematics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The contemporary significance of Scientific Literacy underscores the importance of reading and writing practices, often neglected in classroom settings. The urgent global climate crisis calls for immediate action in Environmental Education, emphasizing holistic environmental relationships.
