Natural metalloproteins perform many functions - ranging from sensing to electron transfer and catalysis - in which the position and property of each ligand and metal, is dictated by protein structure. De novo protein design aims to define an amino acid sequence that encodes a specific structure and function, providing a critical test of the ...

ABSTRACT The authors report two patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in whom carotid arteriography revealed aneurysms that had developed at previously normal locations and from infundibula during the years since initial angiography. Neither of these patients had congenital anomalies of the cerebral circulation and, apart from

A male infant is described with unusual facial appearance, clubfeet, and moderate hydrocephalus internus without obvious deficiency in mental and physical development. Cytogenetic studies revealed a karyotype of 45,XY,--C,--D,+t(C;D). A chromosome 11 and a 13 are involved in the formation of the translocation chromosome.

We report on a patient with psychomotor retardation and a pattern of malformations comprising single umbilical artery, craniofacial anomalies, severe truncal hypotonia, and lower-limb hyporreflexia. G-banding cytogenetics demonstrated a 16p+ chromosome. Parental chromosomes were normal.

One way in which the cell silences genes is to add methyl groups to cytosine (C) bases that are located next to guanine (G) bases in the DNA. The enzymes responsible for this are called the DNA methyltransferases (Dnmts). In a Perspective, Bird discusses several recent reports that identify two new Dnmts (Dnmt3a and 3b) and demonstrate that ...

Computer-assisted molecular design supports drug discovery by suggesting novel chemotypes and compound modifications for lead structure optimization. While the aspect of synthetic feasibility of the automatically designed compounds has been neglected for a long time, we are currently witnessing an increased interest in this topic.
