A Method to Probe the Interfaces in La2−xSrxCuO4-LaSrAlO4-La2−xSrxCuO4 Trilayer Junctions
C-axis trilayer cuprate Josephson junctions are essential for basic science and digital circuit applications of high-temperature superconductors. We present a method for probing the interface perfection in La2−xSrxCuO4 (LSCO)-LaSrAlO4 (LSAO)-La2−xSrxCuO4

An idealized model sensitivity study on Dead Sea desertification with a focus on the impact on convection [PDF]
The Dead Sea desertification-threatened region is affected by continual lake level decline and occasional but life-endangering flash floods. Climate change has aggravated such issues in the past decades.

Dead layer on silicon p-i-n diode charged-particle detectors
Semiconductor detectors in general have a dead layer at their surfaces that is either a result of natural or induced passivation, or is formed during the process of making a contact.

ARXPS-studies ofcˆ-axis textured YBa2Cu3Ox-films [PDF]
YBa2Cu3Ox sputter deposited cold on MgO grows in O2 annealing epitaxially to a transparent, superconducting film with Tc 80K. The unscraped surfaces of these films are smooth showing XPS lines changing with photoelectron take-off angle.

The bark of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestis L.) as a biological indicator of atmospheric air pollution
In dead bark layer 0f Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) exposed to the emission of aluminium works and the electric power plant "Skawina" as well as of chemical plants in Cracow, pH was determined and the content of F, S, Mg, Na, P, K, and Ca.

Thickness dependent magnetotransport in ultra-thin manganite films
To understand the near-interface magnetism in manganites, uniform, ultra-thin films of La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO_3 were grown epitaxially on single crystal (001) LaAlO_3 and (110) NdGaO_3 substrates.

An exactly solvable dead-layer problem
A molecule consisting of two particles interacting with a delta-function attraction, and confined to a one-dimensional volume, is studied. From the exact solution of the system we deduce that the center-of-mass effectively moves in a volume reduced by an inaccessible dead layer near each wall.

Background The skin (exocarp) of fleshy fruit is hugely diverse across species. Most fruit types have a live epidermal skin covered by a layer of cuticle made up of cutin while a few create an outermost layer of dead cells (peridermal layer).

Magnetic dead layer in ferromagnetic manganite nanoparticles
We present experimental evidence on the physical origin of a magnetic dead layer (MDL) in manganite nanoparticles. The studied nanoparticles constitute the wall of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 manganite nanotubes. Magnetic properties analysis and high resolution transmission electron microscopy show a shell of approximately 2 nm thickness with
