Understanding the failure process of sulfide-based all-solid-state lithium batteries via operando nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
All-solid-state lithium batteries performance is affected by the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and electrically disconnected (“dead”) Li metal. Here, via operando NMR measurements, the authors quantify the Li metal in the SEI and “dead” regions ...

Stabilizing Li-metal host anode with LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase

open access: yesNano Convergence, 2021
The development of lithium (Li)-metal anode is high priority research to initiate next-generation Li batteries. Applying Li-metal in practical applications as anode still has many hurdles to clear away, such as low Coulombic efficiency and capacity ...

Detecting lithium plating dynamics in a solid-state battery with operando X-ray computed tomography using machine learning

open access: yesnpj Computational Materials, 2023
Operando X-ray micro-computed tomography (µCT) provides an opportunity to observe the evolution of Li structures inside pouch cells. Segmentation is an essential step to quantitatively analyzing µCT datasets but is challenging to achieve on operando Li ...

Stable Lithium Metal Plating/Stripping in a Localized High-Concentration Cyclic Carbonate-Based Electrolyte

open access: yesElectrochemistry, 2022
Li metal is the ultimate anode material for rechargeable Li batteries because of its high capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, Li metal anodes suffer from low Coulombic efficiency and poor cycling stability owing to the growth of Li ...

Tailoring a N-Doped Nanoporous Carbon Host for a Stable Lithium Metal Anode

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2023
Li metal is a promising anode candidate due to its high theoretical capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, dendrite formation and the resulting dead Li cause continuous Li consumption, which hinders its practical application. In this study,

Fluorinated hybrid solid-electrolyte-interphase for dendrite-free lithium deposition

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Here the authors report a simple method to create a solid electrolyte interphase that is tightly anchored onto the surface of lithium metal anode. This artificial structure suppresses dead and dendrite Li and stores Li via formation of alloys, enabling ...

Dual-Salts Electrolyte with Fluoroethylene Carbonate Additive for High-Voltage Li-Metal Batteries

open access: yesBatteries, 2023
The combination of Li-metal anode and high-voltage cathode is regarded as a solution for the next-generation high-energy-density secondary batteries. However, a traditional electrolyte is either incompatible with the Li-metal anode or vulnerable to high ...

Antibacterial Evaluation of Lithium-Loaded Nanofibrous Poly(L-Lactic Acid) Membranes Fabricated via an Electrospinning Strategy

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2021
Lithium (Li) reportedly has anti-bacterial properties. Thus, it is an ideal option to modify barrier membranes used for guided bone regeneration to inhibit the bacterial adhesion. The aims of this study were to fabricate and characterize nanofibrous poly(

Dendrite‐accelerated thermal runaway mechanisms of lithium metal pouch batteries

open access: yesSusMat, 2022
High‐energy‐density lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are widely accepted as promising next‐generation energy storage systems. However, the safety features of practical LMBs are rarely explored quantitatively. Herein, the thermal runaway behaviors of a 3.26

Si(Li) detectors with thin dead layers for low energy X-ray detection [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science, 1991
Regions of incomplete charge collection, or dead layers, are compared for Si(Li) detectors fabricated with Au and Pd entrance-window electrodes. The dead layers were measured by characterizing the detector spectral response to X-ray energies above and below the Si K alpha absorption edge.
