Mass transfer improvement by secondary flows: Dean vortices in coiled tubular membranes

open access: yesJournal of Membrane Science, 1996
A helically wound hollow-fibre (or tubular) membrane module was studied in an oxygenation operation with water flowing in the laminar regime inside the tube. Data are compared with a conventional module where straight hollow-fibre membranes are in parallel alignment.

Numerical simulation of Dean vortices: fluid trajectories

open access: yesJournal of Membrane Science, 2002
Dean vortices enhance the permeate fluxes obtained with ultrafiltration systems. Although this phenomenon has been studied for micro and ultrafiltration processes, the effect of the feed concentration is not yet thoroughly understood. Several studies have reported that increasing the suspension concentration in the feed enhances the permeate flux ...

Dean vortices in finite-aspect-ratio ducts

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Mechanics, 2013
AbstractWe consider the development of Dean vortices in a curved channel of finite aspect ratio. Solutions to the axisymmetric Navier–Stokes equations are obtained through a finite-element analysis, allowing us to explore the complex and rich bifurcation pattern of the flow as the aspect ratio and Dean number vary.

The Effect of Negative Spanwise Rotation on Dean Vortices

open access: yesJournal of Fluids Engineering, 1997
A finite-volume numerical analysis is performed to examine effect of spanwise rotation on Dean vortices. The specific problem considered is fully developed flow in a square channel with streamwise curvature and spanwise rotation in a negative sense, i.e., the Coriolis force counteracts the centrifugal force. The rotation of the channel is found to have

Dean vortices with wall flux in a curved channel membrane system

Journal of Membrane Science, 1993
Abstract The foremost limitation of performance in using pressure-driven membrane processes for filtration and fractionationis the build-up and deposit of dissolved and suspended solutes onto the membrane surface. Since fluid instabilities are extremely effective in depolarizing solute build-up, we investigate the possibility of using Dean vortices ...
