Interactions of rare earth elements with living organisms and emerging biotechnical applications

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical resources required to achieve net‐zero carbon emission targets and energy security. However, rising demand for REEs coupled with significant extraction and processing challenges and geopolitical risks restricts access to REE resources.

Incorporating cyclone risk in the design of marine protected and conserved areas as an ecosystem‐based adaptation approach

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Marine protected and conserved areas (MPCAs) are promoted as an ecosystem‐based adaptation (EbA) approach to increase community and ecosystem resilience to climate change. However, traditional approaches to MPCA design typically do not consider climate risk or habitat condition under a climate threat.

Macroclimatic niche similarity and species relatedness shift their influence on species co‐occurrence in bryophyte forest communities across scales

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 6, Page 1546-1559, June 2025.
The relationship between epiphytic bryophyte species associations changes with scale. Macroclimatic niche similarity strongly influences co‐occurrence globally but less so at smaller scales. Most species interactions are positive or neutral across scales, though ~7% shift from positive at microhabitat to negative at regional scales, highlighting scale ...

Not just semantics: CO2 fertilization can be a disturbance leading to worldwide forest degradation

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 7, Issue 3, Page 638-643, May 2025.
The physiological effects of increased atmospheric CO2 (CO2 fertilization) on intact forests are generally seen as a process that might buffer them against the impacts of climate change. However, CO2 fertilization can also cause adverse changes in forest conditions, such as alterations in species composition and reduced ecosystem moisture availability.
