Abstract: This study describes the epidemiological, clinical, and microbiological characteristics of a new tick‐borne disease in Spain—Dermacentor‐borne necrosis erythema lymphadenopathy (DEBONEL). The clinical presentations include an eschar at the site of the tick bite, surrounded by an erythema and painful regional lymphadenopathy.

A higher number of ticks was collected in suburban than in urban areas, being Ixodes frontalis the most commonly detected species. The results have significant implications for public health since most Rickettsia spp. detected are zoonotic. This is the first report of the detection of Borrelia spp. and Rickettsia spp.

Abstract Wildlife is an important reservoir of zoonotic pathogens. The objective of the present study was to assess the importance of wild ungulates in the epidemiology of Rickettsia spp. Ticks and spleen samples were collected from 262 red deer (Cervus elaphus) and 83 wild boar (Sus scrofa) hunted in southwestern Spain over a 5‐year period.

Erythema migrans is usually associated with infections/co-infections with Borrelia spp. DEBONEL and other localized diseases caused by Rickettsia spp. following a tick bite usually respond to therapy with doxycycline but possible co-infections with Borrelia spp should be excluded. In this case, PCR in the tick was positive for Rickettsia raoultii.

Rickettsia slovaca Infection in Humans, Portugal
Fifteen years after the initial detection of Rickettsia slovaca in ticks in Portugal, 3 autochthonous cases of R. slovaca infection were diagnosed in humans. All patients had an eschar on the scalp and lymphadenopathy; 2 patients had facial edema.
