Microplastic debris in sandhoppers

Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 2013
Adults of the sandhopper Talitrus saltator were fed with dry fish food mixed with polyethylene microspheres (diameter 10-45 mu m). Observations of homogenized guts revealed the presence of microspheres independently of their dimensions. The gut resident time (GRT) was recorded and most of the microspheres are expelled in 24 h.

Effect of debris flows on debris basin design

Critical Reviews in Environmental Control, 1992
Abstract Debris flows are frequently responsible for deaths and destruction of property in many parts of the world. One method of controlling debris flows is to construct a debris basin in the depositional area of the debris flow path to contain all or part of a debris flow or multiple flows.

Debris thickness patterns on debris-covered glaciers

Geomorphology, 2018
Abstract Many debris-covered glaciers have broadly similar debris thickness patterns: surface debris thickens and tends to transition from convex- to concave-up-down glacier. We explain this pattern using theory (analytical and numerical models) paired with empirical observations.

Marine Debris

2015
Ubiquitous around the world, litter—mostly plastic—is not only unsightly but harmful to marine life. Litter on beaches and in the water includes a lot of things—plastic bags, straws, bottles, plastic utensils, toys, all of which fragment into smaller pieces.

The Response to Particulate Debris

Orthopedic Clinics of North America, 1993
The most common cause of failure of total hip and other arthroplasties is aseptic loosening of the prosthesis. Substantial evidence suggests that the adverse tissue response to prosthesis wear particles is an important contributor to bone loss around implants.

Removing the Debris

2020
When natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and so on affect human communities, the casualty is always severe with untold hardships. Those who are lucky to survive have to face the problem of removing the debris. Of course, government agencies, private companies, spirited individuals, and some of the people affected who still feel ...

MEASURING THE DEBRIS

Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, 1985
The CDM/FP/00 (Continuous Debris Monitor with Flushing Plug) is an on‐line magnetic plug designed to measure the amount of ferrous debris in oil‐lubricated and hydraulic systems. It is superior to existing self‐sealing magnetic plugs in that a continuous reading is given when the unit is plumbed into an oil line.

Space Debris

2018
The space surrounding our planet is densely populated by an increasing quantity of man-made space debris, most of which derives from breakup of operating satellites, abandoned spacecraft or upper stages at the end of mission life. The forecast for the next decade is for a growth in the debris population due to in-orbit explosions, material ...

Debris families observed by the haystack orbital debris radar

Acta Astronautica, 1997
Abstract The Haystack radar provides a unique capability to observe and monitor the orbital debris environment in low-Earth orbit for debris sizes down to less than 1 cm in diameter. Recent changes in the observation geometry of the Haystack radar have greatly enhanced the capability of the radar in separating debris objects into orbit families ...

Debris and Immobility

Art Journal, 2008
A ticker tape of statistical figures races to keep pace with the cataclysms pulsing nonstop through the landscape, through its inhabitants. A sharp rise in the number of limbs lost by soldiers this month. The population of New Orleans cut in half nearly overnight. “That city could be bulldozed,” responds the leader of the US Congress.
