The Rational Design of Biological Complexity: A Deceptive Metaphor

PROTEOMICS, 2007
AbstractBiologists often claim that they follow a rational design strategy when their research is based on molecular knowledge of biological systems. This claim implies that their knowledge of the innumerable causal connections present in biological systems is sufficient to allow them to deduce and predict the outcome of their experimental ...

Cues to Deception in Islamic Websites Text and Design

International Journal on Perceptive and Cognitive Computing, 2023
Deception is not always a lie, but sometimes a factual truth deliberately misleads. The deception continues to grow with the proliferation of the growth of the internet and reliance on internet information to make decisions. Thus, the absence of a deception judgment for websites will make users believe false and deceiving information which poses a ...

Deceptive Design and Ongoing Consent in Privacy Law

Ottawa Law Review, 2021

Designing Good Deceptions in Defense of Information Systems

20th Annual Computer Security Applications Conference, 2005
Since attackers trust computer systems to tell them the truth, it may be effective for those systems to lie or mislead This could waste the attacker's resources while permitting time to organize a better defense, and would provide a second line of defense when access controls have been breached. We propose here a probabilistic model of attacker beliefs

Deception by design: fooling ourselves with gate-level models

Proceedings International Test Conference 2000 (IEEE Cat. No.00CH37159), 2002
The distortion of test coverage statistics by overly simplistic circuit and fault models is explored. It is shown that the artificially high single stuck-at coverage reported on traditional gate-level models results in the omission of test patterns essential to achieve full coverage.

Deception in Program Evaluation Design

2014
Abstract : From the stages of criteria and standards selection onward to evaluation design, program managers have a range of options to deceptively influence the outcome of assessments. Other stakeholders, and those wishing to mitigate and minimize manipulation, must remain on guard for its possibility and take proactive steps to reduce the possibility

Design-driven Deception of Face Recognition: An Empirical Study

ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction
This article takes a design-driven human-centred approach to Facial Recognition Technology (FRT). In a process of Research through Design, we first generated 120 ways to dodge face recognition, then distilled and tested 50 concepts in the lab. The 19 disguises that successfully bypasses FRT informed the implementation of seven disguises initially ...
