This condensed review of a complex method can provide only a general view of what clinical decision analysis is and why it might be useful. It also should help clarify, however, what decision analysis is not: This is not a practical method for making most decisions in everyday clinical practice.

Management Science, 1971
This paper presents simplified techniques for analyzing the effect of uncertainty in large decision problems. Starting with the development of approximate expressions for the moments of a value lottery, we show that the probabilistic assessments of jointly related random variables necessary for these approximations are quite reasonable in number. The

Methods of Information in Medicine, 1976
Attempts have been made for almost two decades to use computers to make clinical diagnoses. Interest in such techniques persists despite little practical success in their application to routine patient care. The explanation of this lack of success is complex and includes (i) lack of understanding of the decisionmaking process itself and (ii) the need ...

Multicriteria Optimization and Decision Making: Principles, Algorithms and Case Studies
arXiv.orgReal-world decision and optimization problems, often involve constraints and conflicting criteria. For example, choosing a travel method must balance speed, cost, environmental footprint, and convenience.

Decision Analysis in Formulary Decision Making
PharmacoEconomics, 1993Although decision making about what drugs to include in an institutional formulary appears to lend itself readily to quantitative techniques such as decision analysis and cost-benefit analysis, a review of the literature reveals that very little has been published in this area.

Abstract Most managers spend more of their time dealing with situations in the area of future change-”What functions should be handled in a regional office?” or “Identify potential problems in the packaging area”-than with situations in the area of past change-”Excessive rejects of Product A.” Also, the future-change thinking ...
