Decision Theories and Methodologies

2018
This chapter introduces the extant decision theories. Whereas the literature segments the field into the Normative, Descriptive, and Prescriptive theories, we identify a fourth. That is the Declarative strand of decision-making. We discuss all four strands of research and praxis. We locate our prescriptive paradigm in the Prescriptive segment.

Recently, Brian Hedden (2023) argues that we should abandon causal decision theory in favour of an alternative: counterfactual decision theory. I argue that, pace Hedden, counterfactual decision theory is not a competitor to, but rather a version of ...

A Peircean Theory of Decision

Synthese, 1999
It is sometimes argued that the fact that possession of perfect knowledge about the future is impossible, means that it is impossible for decisions to be rational. This reasoning is fallacious. If rationality is given a new interpretation, then decisions can be considered rational. A theory of decision that has as its basis Peirce’s theory of abduction

Action theory as a resource for decision theory

Theory and Decision, 1986
Many problems in decision theory intersect problems in action theory. But although this is widely realized, the connections between the two fields have rarely been systematically discussed in the literature. This essay will attempt to articulate some of those connections and a number of important problems they raise.
