Abstract This chapter deals with the important field of environment-induced decoherence and the transition to the classical behaviour of open quantum systems. A number of techniques is developed that allows the determination of decoherence time scales.

Using a quantum particle in R3 as a toy model, and following the rules of Schrödinger’s quantum mechanics, we discuss to which extent one may be able to use “decoherence” to view the quantum particle as a “classical” measuring apparatus to measure position. We discuss also very briefly the measurement of momentum and the case of quantum optics.

AbstractThis chapter is dedicated to open quantum systems. We explain the origin of non-unitary time evolution by studying different interactions between a qubit and the environment. The first part of the chapter introduces the time evolution equation of an open quantum system, also called the Born-Markov master equation and the Redfield equation.
