Exergy Accounting: A Quantitative Comparison of Methods and Implications for Energy-Economy Analysis
Assessments of the feasibility of decoupling energy consumption from economic growth could benefit from an improved understanding of the size, nature and value of different energy flows.

Faithful Solid State Optical Memory with Dynamically Decoupled Spin Wave Storage
We report an optical memory in a rare earth doped crystal with long storage times, up to 20 ms, together with an optical bandwidth of 1.5 MHz. This is obtained by transferring optical coherences to nuclear spin coherences, which were then protected ...

Binary Black Hole Accretion During Inspiral and Merger
We present the results of 2D, moving mesh, viscous hydrodynamical simulations of accretion onto merging supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries. We include viscous heating, shock heating, and radiative cooling, and simulate the transition from the "pre ...

Unusual Swelling Behavior of Hydrogels Modified with Spiropyran as Appendage or Crosslinker
Not so innocent after all—spiropyran crosslinkers in methylenebisacrylamide‐crosslinked poly(acrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid) hydrogels increase crosslinking density, but also, counterintuitively, increase swelling. Charge complexation, cooperative chemo‐mechanical effects, and aggregation may explain these observations.

It is reported that the ferroelectric switching behavior of rhombohedral (3R) phase transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers strongly depends on their domain structures. Single‐domain TMDs (SD‐TMDs) with domain‐wall‐free structures exhibit robust and stable polarization switching, whereas poly‐domain TMDs (PD‐TMDs) with randomly distributed ...

Relationship between CO2 Emissions from Concrete Production and Economic Growth in 20 OECD Countries
Many production activities contribute to environmental degradation by emitting greenhouse gases. The construction sector, one of the main sectors contributing to a country’s economic growth, also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions (especially CO2 ...

Three Different Ways Synchronization Can Cause Contagion in Financial Markets
We introduce tools to capture the dynamics of three different pathways, in which the synchronization of human decision-making could lead to turbulent periods and contagion phenomena in financial markets.

Spectrally Tunable 2D Material‐Based Infrared Photodetectors for Intelligent Optoelectronics
Intelligent optoelectronics through spectral engineering of 2D material‐based infrared photodetectors. Abstract The evolution of intelligent optoelectronic systems is driven by artificial intelligence (AI). However, their practical realization hinges on the ability to dynamically capture and process optical signals across a broad infrared (IR) spectrum.
