Decreasing Serial Cost Sharing under Economies of Scale [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Economic Theory, 1998
We consider the problem of cost sharing in the presence of increasing returns to scale and potential strategic behavior on the part of consumers. We show that any smooth and strictly monotonic mechanism for which a Nash equilibrium exists for all profiles of convex and monotonic preferences must be dictatorial.

Superfluid Helium in Three-Dimensional Counterflow Differs Strongly from Classical Flows : Anisotropy on Small Scales [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Three-dimensional anisotropic turbulence in classical fluids tends towards isotropy and homogeneity with decreasing scales, allowing-eventually-the abstract model of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence to be relevant.

Standardized Water Budget Index and Validation in Drought Estimation of Haihe River Basin, North China

open access: yesAdvances in Meteorology, 2016
The physical-based drought indices such as the self-calibrated Palmer Drought Severity Index (sc-PDSI) with the fixed time scale is inadequate for the multiscalar drought assessment, and the multiscalar drought indices including Standardized ...

Quality of life in patients with comorbidity of chronic pancreatitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in presence of smoking

open access: yesInfusion & Chemotherapy, 2019
Background. A combination of chronic pancreatitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is quite common in clinical practice. This has a negative effect on the clinical course of both diseases.

Relationships between urban form and air quality at different spatial scales: A case study from northern China

open access: yesEcological Indicators, 2021
Examining the relationships between urban form and air quality on small spatial scales across multiple cities could simultaneously identify between- and within-city impacts.

Empirical Evidence for Decreasing Returns to Scale in a Health Capital Model [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2012
We estimate a health investment equation, derived from a health capital model that is an extension of the well-known Grossman model. Of particular interest is whether the health production function has constant returns to scale, as in the standard Grossman model, or decreasing returns to scale, as in the Ehrlich-Chuma model and extensions thereof.

Decreased attention to object size information in scale errors performers [PDF]

open access: yesInfant Behavior and Development, 2017
Young children sometimes make serious attempts to perform impossible actions on miniature objects as if they were full-size objects. The existing explanations of these curious action errors assume (but never explicitly tested) children's decreased attention to object size information.

A Maxwell demon that can work at macroscopic scales

open access: yes, 2022
Maxwell's demons work by rectifying thermal fluctuations. They are not expected to function at macroscopic scales where fluctuations become negligible and dynamics become deterministic.

Multiscale unified prediction of size/scale and Hall-Petch effects in the mechanics of polycrystalline materials

open access: yesJournal of the Mechanical Behavior of Materials, 2013
Materials show size effects in their strength, i.e., improved strength as size decreases. Size effects have been studied extensively at a wide range of scales, from atomistic to continuum.
