The Mesoscale Organization of Deep Convection

1997
The organization of systems at all scales has long been an observed feature in meteorology. Coherent structures can be found from eddies in the planetary boundary layer up to tropical cyclones and mid-latitude depressions. The problem of organization is thus of a fundamental nature. An understanding of the organization of deep convection is relevant to

Rotating deep annulus convection

Tellus, 1969
Sixteen meridian-plane temperature profiles were obtained in the upper symmetric regime of a differentially heated rotating annulus of water by means of a thermocouple probe. This probe, though made as small as practicable, disturbed the flow field, and the nature of the disturbance and its correction is discussed.

On the Anelastic Approximation for Deep Convection

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1990
Abstract A brief review of the scale analysis of Lipps and Hemler is given without any reference to the parameters G and B. The resulting anelastic equations conserve energy, in contrast to the modified anelastic set of equations analyzed by Durran. In addition, the present equations give an accurate solution for the frequency of gravity waves in an ...

Lagrangian Floats for Deep Convection

1997
Abstract : I aim to understand the process of deep convection in the ocean. Near surface water is mixed to great depth at a few high latitude locations, thereby forming the deep and bottom masses of the ocean. This proposal has supported the development and deployment of neutrally buoyant floats in the Labrador Sea in the winters of 1997 and 1998 and ...
