Unconventional geophysical monitoring of deep geothermal reservoirs

open access: yes, 2020
One emerging technique for a continuous geophysical monitoring of geological structures such as EGS is the correlation of ambient seismic noise. Such methods make it possible to monitor minute changes by studying the evolution of the late part of seismic recordings by "coda" wave interferometry (CWI).

Large‐Scale Hydrogen Storage: Surface and Subsurface Challenges

open access: yesChemBioEng Reviews, Volume 13, Issue 2, April 2026.
This review examines underground hydrogen storage with emphasis on the interaction between surface facilities and subsurface reservoirs. Variable renewable hydrogen requires compression, buffering, and purification before injection, while subsurface processes influence wellhead pressure, temperature, and composition.

Hydrogeochemical characteristics and genesis of geothermal water in northern Zhangqiu

open access: yesCarsologica Sinica
The northern part of Zhangqiu district in Jinnan City has developed a thick sedimentary formation from the late Paleozoic to the Cenozoic. In this district, relatively well-developed fault structures and magmatic rocks provide good geothermal conditions.

Potential for heat production by retrofitting abandoned gas wells into geothermal wells.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Using abandoned gas wells as geothermal resources for energy production is an effective way to extract geothermal energy from geological formations. These abandoned wells have the potential to significantly contribute in the rising global demand for ...

A Parallelized 3D Geomechanical Solver for Fluid‐Induced Fault Slip in Poroelastic Media

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, Volume 50, Issue 5, Page 2570-2586, 10 April 2026.
ABSTRACT We present a fully implicit formulation of coupled fluid flow and geomechanics for fluid injection/withdrawal in fractured reservoirs in the context of CO2$\textrm {CO}_2$ storage. Utilizing a Galerkin finite‐element approach, both flow and poroelasticity equations are discretized on a shared three‐dimensional mesh.

Mapping and resource evaluation of deep high-temperature geothermal resources in the Jiyang Depression, China

open access: yesEnergy Geoscience
In China, geothermal resource utilization has mainly focused on resources at shallow and medium depths. Yet, the exploration of deep, high-temperature geothermal resources holds significant importance for achieving the “dual carbon” goals and the ...

Depositional Facies, Sequence Stratigraphy, and Diagenesis of Lower Cretaceous Carbonate Reservoir, Southern Iraq: Implications for Petroleum Exploration

open access: yesJournal of Petroleum Geology, Volume 49, Issue 2, Page 312-345, April 2026.
ABSTRACT The Lower Cretaceous Yamama Formation of southern Iraq represents a key carbonate reservoir within Iraq and the Middle East, yet its complex depositional facies architecture and diagenetic alterations present challenges for predicting reservoir quality.

Mechanical origin of b-value changes during stimulation of deep geothermal reservoirs

open access: yesGeothermal Energy, 2015
The distribution of induced-earthquake magnitudes in deep geothermal reservoirs is a classical tool for monitoring reservoirs. It typically shows some important fluctuations through time and space. Despite being a very crude information (i.e., a scalar quantity) of very complex mechanical stress evolution, understanding these variations could still ...

Distant Storms Can Affect Seismic Noise Crustal Monitoring

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 6, 28 March 2026.
Abstract Using seismic noise interferometry to monitor the Earth's interior relies on continuous seismic wavefields produced by stable, invariant sources. In numerous applications, this condition is relaxed, arguing that secondary scattering effects render the late coda source independent.
