Deep Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest: Real-Life Suspended Animation

Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases, 2013
Deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) is a cerebral protection technique that was developed in the 1950s and popularized in the 1970s. It has become one of the three most common cerebral protection techniques currently used in aortic arch surgeries, with the other two being antegrade cerebral perfusion (ACP) and retrograde cerebral perfusion (RCP).

Aortic Valve Replacement Under Deep Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest

Journal of Cardiac Surgery, 2002
Aortic valve replacement (AVR) in the presence of a calcified aorta or patent grafts may preclude clamping of the ascending aorta. We employed deep hypothermic circulatory arrest in order to circumvent this problem.Between January 1993 and December 2000, 415 patients underwent AVR in our department.

Aortic Surgery and Deep-Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest

Seminars in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, 2014
Aortic arch surgery has become increasingly complex, and novel surgical approaches have been utilized. Efforts aimed at improving neurological outcomes in this patient population have been numerous, with varying degrees of success. This article summarizes the anesthetic considerations for procedures on the aortic arch, including evidence-based ...

Rhythmic electrographic discharges during deep hypothermic circulatory arrest

Clinical Neurophysiology, 2016
The main objective of this study is to examine the prevalence and timing of rhythmic electrographic discharges and periodic sharp transients during aortic arch repair surgeries using DHCA as detected by continuous intraoperative encephalogram (EEG) and correlate it with outcome.Electronic medical records and the intraoperative EEGs of 32 patients who ...

Deep hypothermic circulatory arrest in cyanotic piglets is associated with increased neuronal necrosis

Cardiology in the Young, 2020
Background: The contribution of neonatal cyanosis, inherent to cyanotic congenital heart disease, to the magnitude of neurologic injury during deep hypothermic circulatory arrest has not been fully delineated.

Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy Requiring Cardiopulmonary Bypass and Deep Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest in a Patient With Congenital Afibrinogenemia.

Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, 2020
Congenital afibrinogenemia is a rare autosomal recessive hematologic disorder that results in coagulopathy due to the complete lack of fibrinogen production.

Deep hypothermic circulatory arrest for treatment of renal carcinoma

Journal of Clinical Anesthesia, 2009
The case of a 67-year-old woman with multiple medical problems who presented for resection of a metastatic renal cell carcinoma involving the posterior fossa, is presented. Anesthetic management of the patient, who suffered metastasis to the brain, and who required deep hypothermic circulatory arrest, is discussed.

Moderate and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest has a comparable effect on acute kidney injury after total arch replacement with frozen elephant trunk procedure in type A aortic dissection.

Interactive Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, 2019
OBJECTIVES The goal was to investigate the prevalence of acute kidney injury (AKI) after total arch replacement with frozen elephant trunk procedure, which was achieved by antegrade cerebral perfusion and moderate hypothermic circulatory arrest (MHCA) or

Successful use of deep hypothermic circulatory arrest in pregnancy

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1994
A woman pregnant for 21 weeks underwent an emergency operation because of an aortic arch aneurysm that had ruptured into her left lung. Cardiopulmonary bypass and deep hypothermia were used and she needed 37 minutes of circulatory arrest at a core temperature of 19 degrees C.
