Safe AI for coral reefs: Benchmarking out-of-distribution detection algorithms for coral reef image surveys

open access: yesEcological Informatics
Although deep learning has demonstrated significant advances in qualitative domains, deep learning algorithms remain poor at quantifying the uncertainty of their predictions.

Mapping Multi‐Stakeholder Engagement: A Q Methodology in a Regional Project Management Scenario

open access: yesStrategic Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Research on project management describes the essence of projects involving multiple stakeholders, stressing the value derived from diverse work practices. However, this underestimates issues of counterproductive disagreements associated with diverse groups participating in a project.

Diving into the deep-end: investigating tropical deep-reef fish assemblages

open access: yes, 2019
Increasing demand paired with declining catch rates from traditional fisheries has caused fishers from across the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans to shift their focus towards deep-reef species. This trend is also seen in Australia; however, little is known about the local biology and ecology of these newly targeted species.

Environmental sex reversal in parrotfish does not cause differences in the structure of their gut microbial communities

open access: yesBMC Microbiology
Parrotfish are a common fish in coral reef areas, but little is known about their gut microbial communities. In addition, parrotfish are capable of sex reversal, usually some males are sexually reversed from females, and it is still not known whether ...

Burrow use by Saharan striped polecat (Poecilictis libyca) in an agricultural area of central Tunisia

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Saharan striped polecats in agricultural landscapes use many burrows (30–35 per season), facilitated by sandy soils. Burrow sharing is rare and mainly occurs between males and females during mating. Habitat use shifts seasonally, reflecting disturbance and soil conditions. Maintaining stable sandy habitats may be critical for persistence.

Seagrass species diversity in Tanzania based on morphological and molecular data

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Seagrass diversity along the Tanzanian coast has been documented mainly through morphology, with limited molecular reference data available for Tanzania and the wider Western Indian Ocean. This study combined morphological identification with nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and plastid ribulose‐1,5‐bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase

Additions to the Acanthaceae of the Flora of Tropical East Africa: two new species from northern Kenya

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
The new species Barleria kulalensis I.Darbysh. & Q.Luke and Dicliptera huriensis I.Darbysh. & Q.Luke are described and illustrated and their extinction risk is assessed provisionally. The former is based on Barleria sp. G of the Flora of Tropical East Africa (FTEA), with recent field observation and collection of this species from the foothills of ...

No way back: decadal lack of functional recovery of a coralligenous community in a warming Mediterranean

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Anthropogenic disturbances are degrading nature at a rate that exceeds its capacity to recover. While considerable research has focused on understanding ecosystem impacts, recovery processes remain comparatively overlooked, particularly in marine ecosystems, where long‐term data on how highly complex systems respond to disturbances are scarce.

Integrating and assessing metacommunity drivers of ecosystem function and resilience in benthic algal systems

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Understanding the scales and mechanisms by which species composition interacts with ecosystem functions is critical for forecasting the effects of environmental perturbations on ecosystem services. However, the linkages between what regulates the ecosystem functions of dispersal‐capable networks of communities (metacommunities) and what regulates a ...
