Mechanical behavior and constitutive model of shale under real-time high temperature and high stress conditions

open access: yesJournal of Petroleum Exploration and Production Technology, 2022
The high temperature and high in-situ stress geological environment can significantly affect the mechanical properties, failure modes, and deformation characteristics of deep shale reservoirs.

Performance assessment of a potential underground thermal storage facility: Case study of the closed mine Prosper‐Haniel in the Ruhr coal mining area in Germany

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the feasibility of an underground closed‐loop thermal storage facility at a post‐mining site, intended for seasonal heat energy storage. Its principal design shows water flow directions in winter and summer (1, 2), heat pumps (3), an upper water reservoir (4), and connecting pipes (5).

Fluid‐induced slip on a rate‐and‐state fault during co‐ and post‐injection: The interplay of fluid pressure diffusion and poroelastic stress

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Fault slip can occur ahead of the injection pressure front due to poroelastic stress. Our model captures the interaction of pressure, stress, and friction, providing new insights into injection‐induced seismicity and post‐injection fault slip. Shut‐in operations can either mitigate or accelerate seismic events depending on fault conditions and ...

Quantitative Classification of Shale Lithofacies and Gas Enrichment in Deep-Marine Shale of the Late Ordovician Wufeng Formation and Early Silurian Longyi1 Submember, Sichuan Basin, China

open access: yesEnergies
The classification of shale lithofacies, pore structure characteristics, and controlling factors of gas enrichment in deep-marine shale are critical for deep shale gas exploration and development.

Horizontal well fracturing mode of 'increasing net pressure, promoting network fracture and keeping conductivity' for the stimulation of deep shale gas reservoirs: A case study of the Dingshan area in SE Sichuan Basin

open access: yesNatural Gas Industry B, 2019
The deep shale gas reservoirs of Upper Ordovician Wufeng–Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in the Dingshan area of the southeastern Sichuan Basin have a great burial depth and complicated geologic features, so the fracturing technologies that are used ...

Multi‐factor coupling effects in hydraulic fracturing of laminated shale: Experimental insights and physics‐informed neural network‐driven optimization

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study establishes a multi‐factor coupling framework for predicting breakdown pressure in laminated shale by integrating experimental hydraulic fracturing tests, physics‐informed neural networks (PINNs), and Sobol sensitivity analysis. It reveals how differential stress, the bedding dip angle, and the injection rate interact to influence fracture ...

Geological carbon dioxide storage in the German North Sea: Static‐to‐dynamic capacity refinement for a 10 Mt/y injection scenario

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study assesses whether a saline aquifer in the German North Sea can sustain industrial‐scale CO2 injection at 10 Mt/year over 30 years. A 3D reservoir model is used to compare static capacity with dynamically achievable storage. The work links site‐scale injection strategy design with basin‐scale pressure response, providing a framework for ...

Major engineering breakthrough of Well XA‐1, the deepest ten‐thousand‐meter well in a global sedimentary basin

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Well XA‐1, completed at a true vertical depth of 11 156 m in the Shawan Sag of the Junggar Basin, is the deepest predominantly near‐vertical well drilled in a sedimentary basin. The figure shows the basin's tectonic framework and well location (a), a structural cross‐section spanning the Shawan Sag and adjacent uplifts (b), and the stratigraphic column

Challenges and countermeasures of effective development with large scale of deep shale gas in Sichuan Basin

open access: yesYouqicang pingjia yu kaifa, 2021
Deep shale gas(buried depth>3 500 m) is the potential resource for future exploration in Sichuan Basin.Although the industrial shale gas flows have been obtained at the depth of 3 500~4 000 m in Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation of Sichuan Basin, the commercial ...

Laboratory analysis of liquid injection method on hydraulic fracturing initiation and propagation in deep shale formation

open access: yesNatural Gas Industry B, 2019
Compared with the middle-shallow shale gas reservoirs, deep shale formation often reveals lower fracture complexity, smaller effective stimulated volumes, lower conductivity, and faster declined when the same injection model and technical parameters were
