Challenges in dating blanket peat and implications for understanding its initiation in Ireland

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Blanket peat is widespread in maritime extra‐tropical environments. Prehistoric land‐use activity was traditionally invoked as the stimulus of blanket peat initiation in the British Isles, but recently, climate has been viewed as the driver of peat formation.

Late Quaternary population expansion in gray brocket deer [Subulo gouazoubira (G. Fisher, 1814), Cervidae, Mammalia] in Brazil

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT There is little information about the changes in the abundance of mammalian species in South America during the late Quaternary, which is a key parameter to understanding past ecological and evolutionary dynamics. Here, we describe a conspicuous increase in the abundance of the gray brocket deer (Subulo gouazoubira G.

Mixed evidence for disturbance‐mediated apparent competition for declining caribou in western British Columbia, Canada

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Investigating the decline of a caribou population in central British Columbia, we found that 1) recent wildfires were a stronger draw for primary ungulate prey than cutblocks, 2) most predators were associated with primary prey but had mixed responses to disturbance, and 3) caribou used cutblocks, potentially increasing their risk.

A DYNAMIC EXERCISE IN REDUCING DEER-VEHICLE COLLISIONS: MANAGEMENT THROUGH VEHICLE MITIGATION TECHNIQUES AND HUNTING [PDF]

open access: yes
The costs of deer-vehicle collisions (DVCs) nationwide are estimated to be in excess of $1 billion annually. In this study, factors contributing to the abundance of DVCs are identified and the potential effectiveness of various deer management strategies

A portable structure for identifying wolverines and Canada lynx using integrated cameras and hair snags

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
This non‐invasive methods study seeks to address challenges associated with collecting long‐term occupancy and demographic data on wolverine and Canada lynx by developing a modified camera and hair snag (C&H) monitoring system. After 5 consecutive field seasons of testing, our study suggests the system adds richness of data and underscores the utility ...
