Isolation of a Trypanosome Related to Trypanosoma theileri (Kinetoplastea: Trypanosomatidae) from Phlebotomus perfiliewi (Diptera: Psychodidae)

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2018, Issue 1, 2018., 2018
The Trypanosoma theileri group includes several trypanosome species hardly distinguishable due to the lack of discriminating morphological characters. Trypanosomes belonging to this group have been isolated from different bovine, ovine, and cervids in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Americas. The principal vectors of the T.

Parasitism rates of Lipoptena guimaraesi and a new record of Lipoptena mazamae on Ozotoceros bezoarticus from the Central Pantanal wetlands in Brazil Índices parasitológicos de Lipoptena guimaraesi e novo registro de Lipoptena mazamae sobre Ozotoceros bezoarticus no Pantanal central, Brasil

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária, 2011
From May to October of 2006 we collected 143 louse flies of the genus Lipoptena on the body surface of 16 pampas deer Ozotocerus bezoarticus captured in four farms from the central area of the Brazilian Pantanal wetlands.

In Silico Studies on Development of Novel Virostatic Agents against Bluetongue Virus

open access: yesInternational Scholarly Research Notices, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
The core of BTV is organized into three concentric structures of which VP7 protein forms the major core protein. The subcore consists of VP3 protein and the innermost part of the core is made of three minor proteins: VP1, VP4, and VP6. Earlier it was reported that core‐like particles (CLPs) composed of viral VP7 and VP3 proteins were produced in order ...

Cross–Species Transmission at the Wildlife–Livestock Interface: A Case Study of Epidemiological Inference From Mule Deer GPS Collar Data

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
Mycoplasma bovis is bacterial pathogen of cattle that is rarely detected in wildlife. Our intensive monitoring of free‐ranging mule deer led to the discovery of Mycoplasma bovis as the cause of death in an animal that had recently selected for use of a dairy premise.

To crop or not to crop: Comparing whole‐image and cropped classification on a large dataset of camera trap images

open access: yesIET Computer Vision, Volume 18, Issue 8, Page 1193-1208, December 2024.
In this work, the authors assess the hypothesis that classifying animals cropped from camera trap images using a species‐agnostic detector yields better accuracy than classifying whole images. We find that incorporating an object detection stage into an image classification pipeline yields a macro‐average F1 improvement of around 25% on a large, long ...

Temperature, water travel time, and dissolved organic matter structure river microbial communities in a large temperate watershed

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 69, Issue 7, Page 1618-1635, July 2024.
Abstract There is growing evidence that the composition of river microbial communities gradually transitions from terrestrial taxa in headwaters to unique planktonic and biofilm taxa downstream. Yet, little is known about fundamental controls on this community transition across scales in river networks.

Ornithomya biloba, Pseudolynchia garzettae and Pseudolynchia canariensis (Diptera: Hippoboscidae): three new United Kingdom colonists and potential disease vectors

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 38, Issue 2, Page 160-171, June 2024.
A citizen science project found evidence that three species of louse fly, which had previously been considered to be vagrants, are now breeding in the United Kingdom. Pseudolynchia garzettae was found on Nightjars, Ornithomya biloba on Swallows and Sand Martins and free flying Pseudolynchia canariensis were found in London.
