Abstract The target article presents strong empirical evidence that knowledge is basic. However, it offers an unsatisfactory account of what makes knowledge basic. Some current ideas in cognitive neuroscience – predictive coding and analysis by synthesis – point to a more plausible account that better explains the evidence.

Modeling default reasoning using defaults
User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction, 1991User modeling research can benefit from formal automated reasoning tools. However existing formal tools may need to be modified to suit the needs of user modeling. Theorist is a simple framework for default reasoning. It can be used as a tool for building and maintaining a user model, and as a model of a user's default reasoning.

The concept of prioritization, either implicitly or explicitly, has been generally recognized as a tool to eliminate spurious extensions. Implicit priority information can be used when specificity is the preference criterion by means of which extensions are selected.

A formalism is motivated and described for representing defaults in specifications. The formalism is called ordered theory presentations. The ability to represent defaults narrows the gap between a customer's initial requirements and a formal specification, and supports reuse on both a small and a large scale.
