A mobile wooden commode was designed and built for use in defecography. The commode is made of 1/2-inch-thick plywood with birch veneer and a solid clear pine seat. Water or copper sheets are recommended for radiation filtration. A radiopaque ruler attached to the commode with a spring enables midline measurements.

10 Dynamic rectal examination (defecography)
Baillière's Clinical Gastroenterology, 1994Dynamic rectal examination (DRE), first described in 1952, is becoming more widely used in the dynamic evaluation of pelvic floor and anorectal motility disorders. It is a minimally invasive investigation which is well tolerated by patients and provides information about the anosphincteric, puborectal and levator muscle in addition to insight in rectal

Radiation dose in defecography.
Radiology, 1990The effective dose equivalent, as an expression of total patient risk for exposure to limited areas of the body, and gonadal doses associated with hereditary effects were estimated in 67 consecutive subjects (43 women and 24 men) who underwent defecography.

Pelvic floor and defecatory dysfunction are common in the female patient population. When combined with physical examination, barium defecography allows for accurate and expanded assessment of the underlying pathology and helps to guide future intervention.

Defecography as Part of the Evaluation of Anorectal Dysfunction
Gastroenterology Nursing, 1991Defecography is the evaluation of the anus and rectum during the act of defecation. We have devised a very simple method of performing this examination in conjunction with the Radiology Department. The entire procedure takes less than 15 minutes from start to finish. In our hospital, we have performed over 130 of these tests.

Functional analysis of anorectal junction: Defecography
RöFo - Fortschritte auf dem Gebiet der Röntgenstrahlen und der bildgebenden Verfahren, 1988The radiograms and videotape recordings from 32 defecographies in patients with defecation complaints were retrospectively analyzed. The patients had been examined in an upright position during stooling of a barium contrast medium. All patients had had a double contrast colon examinations which was normal. Internal procidentia was found in 20 patients,

This study was designed to analyze the frequency of different findings at defecography in patients with defecation disorders and see in what way the evaluation could be improved. The reports of investigations in 2,816 patients were analyzed.Twenty-three percent of the investigations were considered normal.

Radiographic imaging of dynamic changes within the pelvic cavity and rectum during evacuation has been recognized as a valuable method of assessment. This study was designed to assess the incidence and clinical significance of defecographic findings in patients with possible evacuation disorders. All defecographic studies were reviewed by a single ...

Are interpretations of video defecographies reliable and reproducible?
International Journal of Colorectal Disease, 1997Video defecography is a dynamic investigation which can influence surgical decision making in constipated patients. A study was therefore undertaken to assess the inter and intraobserver variability in video defecography. Specifically, we sought to assess the interpretation of video defecographies by a group of observers with the same training ...

Defecography: A Swedish Perspective
2006We recommend standard use of contrast medium in the rectum, vagina, and small bowel. However, intraperitoneal contrast medium is preferable in the diagnosis of enterocele and peritoneocele, but this method is more invasive. Bladder contrast should be used only in patients with complex pelvic floor disorders and/or previous pelvic floor surgery.
