Defence Contracting and Accrual‐Based Earnings Management

ABSTRACT We examine accrual‐based earnings management in Spanish defence firms in 2011–2020, using a unique database from the Spanish Ministry of Defence. We find higher levels of accrual‐based earnings management and lower accrual quality in firms where defence contracts represent a high proportion of their total sales.

Do aphid endosymbiotic bacteria influence parasitoid searching behaviour through changes in aphid honeydew production?

Hamiltonella defensa infection increases honeydew production in certain aphid genotypes, potentially modifying aphid feeding behaviour. Parasitoid wasps, Aphidius ervi, are more attracted to honeydew from H. defensa‐infected aphids; though larger honeydew amounts may slightly deter searching.

Different BYDV‐PAV isolates exert contrasting effects on aphid fitness, including reproduction and winged production. Different BYDV‐PAV isolates have contrasting effects on aphid dispersal patterns. Aphid feeding behaviour is modulated by the presence of endosymbionts and plant viruses.
