Defensiveness and Defense Mechanisms
Journal of Personality, 1998This introduction to the Journal of Personality's special issue on the topic of defense mechanisms raises the question of why defenses have been largely overlooked in personality research. Although defenses were originally discussed in the context of psychopathology, for the past 60 years psychodynamically oriented psychologists have understood that ...

The Leukocyte as a Defense Mechanism
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1977SUMMARY Within the udder, neutrophil polymorphonuclear (pmn) leukocytes are capable of phagocytosing a wide variety of particles (microorganisms, milk fat globules, casein). Studies of pmn leukocyte function indicate that milk fat globules and casein are perhaps significant deterrents to phagocytosis and destruction of Staphylococcus aureus by pmn ...

The function of the immune system of the fetus and the newborn is suspect because of an increased incidence of infection, poor clinical response to infection, diminished lymphoid tissue, and sluggish immunologic responses to a variety of natural or test antigens.

Defense Mechanisms and Personality Disorders
The Journal of Nervous & Mental Disease, 1999The evaluation of defense mechanisms represents one of the most promising fields in the psychodynamic-oriented empirical research on personality disorders (PDs). This study examines the association between DSM-IV PDs and defense mechanisms. We evaluated a sample of 50 adult outpatients seeking personality assessment and psychotherapeutic treatment. PDs

The susceptibility of complement-deficient individuals to various severe infections, and studies of the effector mechanisms involved in the destruction of infectious agents, demonstrate the importance of complement in providing an effective host defense system. It is also becoming increasingly apparent that complement not only plays a role in 'natural'

Defense mechanisms of the body
Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, 1976Abstract There are many poorly understood aspects of the subject of resistance to infection. It is not known, for example, why one species may be very sensitive and another resistant to infection by the same organism. The numerous mechanisms that are recognized as barriers to infection of the oral cavity are reviewed.

Thermoregulatory defense mechanisms
Critical Care Medicine, 2009Core body temperature is normally tightly regulated by an effective thermoregulatory system. Thermoregulatory control is sometimes impaired by serious illness, but more typically remains intact. The primary autonomic defenses against heat are sweating and active precapillary vasodilation; the primary autonomic defenses against cold are arteriovenous ...

A multitude of overlapping defenses has evolved to help combat the inventiveness of pathogens seeking to invade us, and because the lung is the most common primary route of infection, it is in the lung that the most varied responses are seen. This article focuses on recent research, particularly in innate immunity, and gives a general overview of the ...

What is a Mechanism of Defense?
1993We are all agreed on this point: the theory of defense is a cornerstone of psychodynamic thinking. The analytical literature on various aspects of this theory is vast. Yet, there are few surveys of the theory as a whole (cf. Sjoback, 1973), and we find conspicuous confusion and salient dissent in the discussion of even its basic assumptions.
