Transvenous Biventricular Defibrillation Can Improve Defibrillation Threshold
Pacing and Clinical Electrophysiology, 2004A case report of a patient with a high defibrillation threshold at initial implantation that was improved by the insertion of a shocking coil in the left lateral cardiac vein is discussed.

EFFICACY of implantable cardioverter defibrillator therapy is critically dependent on the ICD’s ability to terminate ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation in a variety of clinical circumstances. To ensure that a device is reliable, adequate testing procedures are required at the time of the implant to determine effective defibrillation ...

Defibrillation Threshold: A Simple and Quantitative Estimate of the Ability to Defibrillate
Pacing and Clinical Electrophysiology, 1987It has recently been shown that the probability of successful defibrillation as a function of energy has a sigmoidal dose‐response relationship. Determination of a defibrillation “dose‐response curve” is time consuming and requires multiple defibrillation attempts.

Transthoracic defibrillation threshold of sine and trapezoidal waveforms in defibrillation
Journal of Electrocardiology, 1989The transthoracic defibrillation threshold of trapezoidal (2.5-, 5-, 10-, 15-, 20-, 40-, and 55-msec duration) and damped sine waveforms were established in groups of anesthetized greyhounds. Of the seven trapezoidal waveforms, the threshold current was lowest for the 20-msec pulse but was not significantly different for the 5-20-msec pulses (p greater

Defibrillation Threshold Testing
Cardiac Electrophysiology Clinics, 2012Defibrillation testing has been routinely performed as part of the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation procedure, and is currently supported by practice guidelines; however, more recently, this practice has been called into question. Such testing is safe, and serious complications are rare. With modern ICD systems, physicians will

Ventricular defibrillation thresholds with capacitor discharge
Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing, 1979By means of a selfadjusting experimental protocol based on the evaluation of the cardiac impedance, peak current thresholds were determined to defibrillate canine hearts with transventricular capacitor discharges. From 346 successful defibrillations performed on 20 mongrel dogs, an average value of 0·82 A/kg (s.d.=0·3) was found.

Effects of flecainide on the atrial defibrillation threshold
The American Journal of Cardiology, 1989Abstract Little is known about the effects of antiarrhythmic drugs on the atrial defibrillation threshold in humans. An early study with quinidine 1 showed a significant reduction in number of shocks and a decreased energy requirement to restore sinus rhythm in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation (AF).

Elevated Defibrillation Threshold with Venlafaxine Therapy
Pharmacotherapy: The Journal of Human Pharmacology and Drug Therapy, 2004Depression is a common comorbidity in patients with heart failure or implantable cardioverter‐defibrillators (ICDs). A 35‐year‐old woman with depression, nonischemic cardiomyopathy, and a history of cardiac arrest had an ICD implanted. During initial testing, the device failed to internally defibrillate the patient.

Defibrillation Threshold Testing: Tradition or Necessity?
Pacing and Clinical Electrophysiology, 2009Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) have become an essential tool for primary and secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death. Traditionally, defibrillation threshold (DFT) testing is part of the “lege artis” ICD implantation. Taking into consideration that the absolute mortality reduction in primary prevention trials is estimated around 8%

Effects of Flecainide on Defibrillation Threshold in Pigs
Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology, 1993Flecainide has been reported to decrease defibrillation efficacy in pentobarbital-anesthetized dogs. Conversely, flecainide did not alter defibrillation energy requirements in halothane-anesthetized pigs. We wished to determine whether these discrepancies were related to defibrillation technique, interaction with the anesthetic regimen, or animal ...
