Definite Descriptions are Directly Referential [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Amongst those who have analysed definite descriptions as referential, most have considered them to be indirectly referential. In contrast, I will argue that definite descriptions are directly referential, in the sense of Kaplan (1980).

Robust Reinforcement Learning Control Framework for a Quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Using Critic Neural Network

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2025.
Quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle control is critical to maintain flight safety and efficiency, especially when facing external disturbances and model uncertainties. This article presents a robust reinforcement learning control scheme to deal with these challenges.

The notion of sense: presenting a non-fregean alternative [PDF]

open access: yesPrincípios, 2009
Problems abound in connection with the characterization of the Fregean notion of sense. Frege often implies that the sense of a proper name is given by an associated definite description, whose content uniquely picks out the reference of the name in ...

Generating minimal definite descriptions [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 40th Annual Meeting on Association for Computational Linguistics - ACL '02, 2001
The incremental algorithm introduced in \DalRei95 for producing distinguishing descriptions does not always generate a minimal description. In this paper, I show that when generalised to sets of individuals and disjunctive properties, this approach might generate unnecessarily long and ambiguous and/or epistemically redundant descriptions.

A perceptually based computational framework for the interpretation of spatial language [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The goal of this work is to develop a semantic framework to underpin the development of natural language (NL) interfaces for 3 Dimensional (3-D) simulated environments.

Co-extensive theories and unembedded definite descriptions

open access: yes, 2005
Russell argued, famously, that definite descriptions are not logical constituents of the sentences in which they appear. In neither of the following should we suppose that the definite description picks anything out: The King of France is bald

Determinants of Long‐Term Benefit From High Dose Melphalan With Autologous Stem Cell Transplant in AL Amyloidosis

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Hematology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT High dose melphalan (HDM) with autologous stem cell transplant is an established treatment for systemic light chain amyloidosis, but its incremental benefit in the era of effective standard intensity therapy is unknown. We retrospectively analyzed 475 transplant‐eligible patients who completed standard intensity treatment with or without HDM ...

(De)accenting definite descriptions [PDF]

open access: yesZAS Papers in Linguistics, 2001
This paper focuses on definite descriptions. It will be shown that a definite description refers to a given discourse referent if the descriptive content is completely deaccented. But if there is a focussed element within the descriptive content it introduces a novel referent.
