, 2016 Amongst those who have analysed definite descriptions as referential, most have considered them to be indirectly referential. In contrast, I will argue that definite descriptions are directly referential, in the sense of Kaplan (1980).

Proceedings of the 40th Annual Meeting on Association for Computational Linguistics - ACL '02, 2001 The incremental algorithm introduced in \DalRei95 for producing distinguishing descriptions does not always generate a minimal description. In this paper, I show that when generalised to sets of individuals and disjunctive properties, this approach might generate unnecessarily long and ambiguous and/or epistemically redundant descriptions.

It will be shown that a definite description refers to a given discourse referent if the descriptive content is completely deaccented.
