We study the nature of deflation risk by extracting the objective distribution of inflation from the market prices of inflation swaps and options. We find that the market expects inflation to average about 2.5 percent over the next 30 years. The demonization of deflation has drawn attention away from the key problem of productivity. It arises from the two errors that deflation causes recessions and that investment responds to real interest rates. Deflation can be a symptom of inadequate demand but it can also occur when demand is strong.

However, beginning in the 1990s, persistently falling consumer prices have emerged in Japan, China and elsewhere. The reduction of a matrix which has several roots is treated. For example, when a characteristic root of a matrix A of order n is known, it is possible, by any of sev eral known methods, to replace A by a matrix B, n-1 of whose roots are the yet unknown roots of A, and such that either B is of order n-1, or else its remaining root is zero.
