On the determination of the deflection of the vertical by satellite altimetry
Abstract With the advent of satellite altimetry it has become possible to estimate the height of the marine geoid above the ellipsoid to an accuracy of better than 1 m. At a crossover of a satellite's ascending and descending tracks, altimeter data can be used to obtain two linearly independent estimates of the geoid's horizontal gradient.

Long-Term Deflection Monitoring for Bridges Using X and C-Band Time-Series SAR Interferometry
This study aims to monitor the deformation of bridges, namely in the form of long-term deflection and thermal dilation, using multi-temporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) observations.

The traditional altimetry satellites based on pulse-limited radar altimeter only calculate along-track deflection of the vertical (DOV), which results in poorer precision of the prime vertical component than that of the meridian component and limits the ...

The elements of the Eötvös matrix, usually determined by torsion balance measurements, are useful in many geodetic applications. We present a method for the computation of the elements of the normal Eötvös matrix at a point on the Earth’s physical ...

The Ekman spiral for piecewise-uniform viscosity [PDF]
We re-visit Ekman's (1905) classic problem of wind-stress-induced ocean currents to help interpret observed deviations from Ekman's theory, in particular from the predicted surface current deflection of 45∘.
